More honors for ’Nova men, women

The weekly honors continue to pour in for Villanova’s men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Forward Saddiq Bey was named Big 5 player of the week while teammate Justin Moore earned Big East Rookie of the Week honors for the second week in a row.

On the women’s side, Villanova swept Big East honors as Mary Gedaka was named Player of the Week and Maddy Siegrist earned Freshman of the Week honors for the third time.

Bey averaged 24.5 points and 7.5 rebounds to pace the Wildcats to Big

5 wins over Penn (80-69) and Saint Joseph’s (78-66). Bey scored a career-high

27 points in the win over the Quakers and 22 versus the Hawks.

Moore averaged 15.5 points in Villanova’s two wins. He netted 17 points against the Quakers and saved 10 of his 14 points for the second half to hold off a rally by the Hawks.

In other news, Villanova moved up to No. 20 in both the Associated Press and USA Today top 25 polls.

Gedaka averaged 17.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and

2.5 blocks in games against Drexel and Saint Joseph’s. She had 16 points, a careerhigh 16 rebounds and four blocks versus the Dragons and had 19 points and five boards in the win over the Hawks.

Siegrist had a monster week, averaging 23.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and

2.5 assists, while shooting

51.5 percent from the field. She collected 24 points and five rebounds against Drexel and followed that with a 23-point, eight-rebound, three-assist, threesteal performanc­e versus the Hawks.

Penn’s Kayla Padilla was the women’s Big 5 Player of the week. The freshman guard averaged 22.7 points and 3.3 steals per fame to pace the Quakers to wins over Hartford, La Salle and Stetson. She had

20 points, four steals and two assists against Hartford, 24 points, four assists and three steals in the win over La Salle and

24 points and three steals against Stetson. The Quakers (7-1) are off to the best start in program history.
