Down the impeachment rabbit hole

- Ken Derow, Swarthmore

To the Times:

We are now witnessing a moment in our history when the American people are being led “down the rabbit hole” into “Wonderland.” This Wonderland is surreal, but it is not fictional, nor is it harmlessly whimsical like the original story.

This modern-day Wonderland is full of characters who masquerade as something that they are not, all for the purpose of spinning a web of deceit and deception, whose goal is to distort reality and hide the truth. In this real life Wonderland, President Donald Trump is the Mad Hatter, the ever-grinning Cheshire Cats are portrayed by Rudy Giuliani and Republican party leadership and we are all playing the part of Alice. In this man-made fantasy world truth and facts are subordinated to illusion.

President Trump and his party’s leadership are trying to rebut a seemingly incontrovertible array of nonimpeachable fact-based witnesses who gave testimony to Trump’s wrongdoing in the Ukraine. This is wrongdoing that could potentially result in Trump’s being removed from office. They ask us to disbelieve what our very eyes and ears have heard and follow them down into the magical rabbit hole. Of course, in the original Alice in Wonderland, Alice woke up and realized that she had merely been dreaming and that Wonderland was never actually real.

The question for us, the American people, is when, or more pointedly, will we ever wake-up and realize that the Wonderland world created by President Trump and his acolytes is not real. Unlike the fictional account this is still unfolding. Trump’s Wonderland was created to manipulate us, not for our simple amusement and pleasure.

America must wake up or this metaphorical dream-state may end up turning into a shared national nightmare with farreaching and lasting consequences.
