2 DCCC police cadet grads snag scholarshi­ps

Delaware County Community College students Kerri Ann Christie and Michael Palmer each received a $2,650 Quest for the Best scholarshi­p at the College’s Municipal Police Academy graduation ceremony at Interboro High School.

Of the 59 police cadets who graduated, Christie and Palmer were chosen to receive the scholarshi­ps by William Davis, director of the Municipal Police Academy, because of their positive attitudes, excellent grades, can-do spirit and hard work. Tuition for the Municipal Police Academy, which is held at the College’s Marple Campus, is $5,800, which includes books.

Quest for the Best is a tax-exempt, private foundation that provides funding and services to groups committed to “strengthen­ing the common good of mankind.” Quest for the Best President Taras Wochok joined Davis and DCCC President Dr. L. Joy Gates Black in presenting scholarshi­ps to the cadets.

Graduation keynote speaker Delaware County Common Pleas Court Judge Frank Hazel addressed the 59 graduates, consisting of 44 day and

15 evening students. Delaware County Community College’s Municipal Police Academy has served the community since

1977, and also conducts mandatory Act 180 inservice training for current municipal police officers. The Police Academy has trained more than 95 percent of the police officers in Delaware County and more than 75 percent of the police officers in

Chester County.

Kevin Neary fundraiser

The Friends of Kevin Neary are hosting a fundraisin­g event on Jan. 11 from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Choppers Hatchet House in Cherry Hill. By Choppers we mean axes. Yes, you can throw an ax and help raise money for Neary’s long-term care.

Neary, a Chichester native, was severely injured during a street robbery and shooting a Philadelph­ia street in November 2011. He remains paralyzed from the neck down.

Delloso sets holiday open house

Join state Rep. David Delloso, D-162 of Ridley Park, at his borough office for a holiday open house where he and his staff can answer questions on state-related matters and programs.

Residents are encouraged to stop by for light refreshmen­ts from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec.

19 at 605 E. Chester Pike, Ridley Park. People are asked to consider donating toiletries or winter clothes to help veterans and nonperisha­ble items for local soup kitchens. Delloso’s office will serve as a collection point for both causes through the end of the month.

“I’m hoping residents can take a few moments out of their busy holiday schedules to stop by our office for a few holiday refreshmen­ts,” Delloso said. “My office is here to serve our residents throughout the year, and at this time we’re also attempting to aid local charities and nonprofits to provide for those in need.”

Delloso’s office provides numerous free services year-round, including veterans assistance, APPRISE, notary, Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program and more. Residents may call his office at 610-5341002 to schedule an appointmen­t.

Holiday horse event

On Christmas Day, Wednesday, Dec. 25, The Resonant Horse in Newtown Square, is hosting a unique and powerful event: Devotion In a Barn.

From 1-2:30 p.m., there will have a contemplat­ive/mindfulnes­s exercise, with a short devotional, and then 30 minutes of silence, along with the horses. Hot cider, frankincen­se and myrrh will be available.

Tree lighting at Mercy Catholic

Mercy Catholic Medical Center – Mercy Fitzgerald Campus celebrated its annual tree lighting ceremony on On Tuesday, Dec. 10. The event included a live nativity scene, Christmas carols and a visit from Santa Claus.

Yeadon Fire Company and Mercy EMS kicked off the ceremony by raising a firetruck ladder to light the hospital’s Christmas tree. Additional­ly, Mercy Fitzgerald employees, their families and community members enjoyed the live nativity scene and musical performanc­es by Darren Lucis and Joanne Farrell of Sway. Local children were treated to a visit from Santa Claus, and each attendee received a special gift courtesy of Mercy Fitzgerald.

“We are proud to host the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony for the community,” said Christophe­r Cullom, president of Mercy Catholic Medical Center. “The ceremony brings local families and colleagues together to celebrate the holidays and spread goodwill to one another.”
