100 Years Ago – 1919:

Setting an example, which others, similarly engaged, will no doubt soon follow, a trio of Chester restaurate­urs have just torn the lining from their patrons’ pocketbook­s by the boost in bill-of-fares which went into effect today. Best quality sandwiches have advanced from 15 to 20 cents, and coffee, which for time out of mind, has been 5 cents a cup, has taken on another nickel.

75 Years Ago – 1944:

Christmas vacations ranging from one to nearly three weeks will be enjoyed by students and their teachers of schools throughout Delaware County. A number of school districts have closed their schools early to enable boys and girls to assist merchants during the holiday season and able to save fuel. Public schools in Chester will close this Friday to reopen Tuesday, Jan. 2. High school students doing satisfacto­ry work were permitted to obtain a release from classes Monday, Dec. 11, to engage in full-time holiday work.

50 Years Ago – 1969:

Icy December breezes licked cruelly at 30 men as they worked on barges in the Delaware River off Flower Street in Chester. As temperatur­es hovered around 30 degrees they were pouring the first concrete for the $84 million Chester-Bridgeport, N.J.,

Bridge. The bridge, expected to be completed in late 1972, will tie in major expressway­s and interstate routes in both states and will probably open up for major developmen­t areas in Gloucheste­r County, N.J.

25 Years Ago – 1994:

By a 3-2 vote, a final land developmen­t plan for a golf learning center and driving range on West Chester Pike, west of Route 252, narrowly won approval of the Newtown supervisor­s. Casting an affirmativ­e vote, supervisor­s Chairwoman Suzanne Mathes said it’s important to remember that the proposed use of the former 13.8-acre Chip and Putt driving range is permitted under township zoning.

10 Years Ago – 2009:

An

$85 million movie-studio deal that’s been in the works for more than two years is “getting really close” to completion, Philadelph­ia attorney and developer Jeffrey Rotwitt said Wednesday. “There are a lot of complicate­d moving parts in this, but it’s coming together nicely,” said Rotwitt. The 370,000 square-foot production facility would be located in Chester Township on a 33acre property on Concord Road that once served as a recreation­al center for Sun Oil employees.
