100 Years Ago – 1919:
With the need for at least 1,000 more houses in Chester at the present time to properly house the people already here, and with the population increasing every day, there is some concern being felt at this time as to where the builders depend upon assistance to carry on this work will get the money when spring opens. The statement has been made that the local trust companies may not be able to give all the assistance needed.
75 Years Ago – 1944:
A woman of Harvard Inn, Swarthmore, sometime this week will wave a hearing in West Chester on charges of having voted twice on last Election Day. A former president of the Chester County League of Women Voters, she is charged with voting in West Chester “when not properly qualified.” Both she and her husband are registered Democrats.
50 Years Ago – 1969:
Three western Delaware County townships are asking the U.S. District Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., to overthrow a Federal Aviation Administration ruling that would permit an airport in Concord. Attorneys for Concord, Birmingham and Thornbury and for the Birmingham Civic Association filed the action. The general aviation airport and industrial park is proposed for a 700acre site at routes 1 and 202, commonly known as Painter’s Crossing.
25 Years Ago – 1994:
Masseuses at two Upper Darby fitness clubs have been charged with offering customers an illegal workout alternative. Two township women and one Philadelphia woman were arrested last Tuesday on charges of prostitution and related offenses and violation of township ordinances prohibiting massage parlors. According to Sgt. Michael Kenny, police received a complaint regarding two locations of alleged prostitution activity and investigations were conducted at the fitness clubs. An undercover officer entered both establishments and was “offered sex for money” at both locations, police said.
10 Years Ago – 2009:
In Dianne Nicely’s firstgrade class at Main Street Elementary in Upland, students stomp, clap and shimmy while belting out a tune about animal habitats. Sing-to-Learn is a new initiative rolled out this fall by the Chester Children’s Chorus, designed to reinforce classroom instruction with music.
