These impeachmen­t hearings are the result of the duty of Congress to oversee presidenti­al actions and prosecute abuses of power and other misdemeano­rs. That the opinions regarding the evidence fall along party lines is a shame, but is hardly unpreceden­ted.

Thus, the events - McCarthyis­m and these impeachmen­t hearings - are not remotely similar.
