These impeachment hearings are the result of the duty of Congress to oversee presidential actions and prosecute abuses of power and other misdemeanors. That the opinions regarding the evidence fall along party lines is a shame, but is hardly unprecedented.
Thus, the events - McCarthyism and these impeachment hearings - are not remotely similar.
