Mayo Clinic announces 3 comeback players of the year

-

Georgia Southern offensive lineman Drew Wilson, Oregon State quarterback Jake Luton and Salisbury State receiver Octavion Wilson have been selected the Mayo Clinic Comeback Players of the Year.

The winners were announced Thursday and they will be honored at the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 28.

Luton suffered season-ending injuries the past two seasons, but returned this year to pass for 28 touchdowns and three interceptions.

Octavion Wilson started his career at Division III powerhouse Mount Union, but was forced to give up football and school after a heart condition led to lingering issues with pain and eventually depression. He returned to the game after three years away.

Drew Wilson returned to action this year and regained his starting job after missing all last season recovering from a detached retina that left him legally blind in his right eye.

He needed four surgeries to fix his eye and the recovery forced him to not only miss the 2018 season, but the entire fall academic semester.

Wilson starts at right tackle for Georgia Southern and helped pave the way for a triple-option attack to run for 261.5 yards per game (eighth in the nation). The Eagles finished 7-5 and were the only team to beat Sun Belt Conference champion Appalachian State.

Utah gets big flip on Day 2

The ripple effect of a coaching change at Boston College seems to have benefited Utah in recruiting.

The Utes signed highly touted cornerback Clark Phillips on Thursday, the second day of the early signing period. Phillips had been committed to Ohio State, but flipped late after Buckeyes co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach Jeff Hafley took the head coaching job at Boston College.

Phillips, from La Habra, Calif., is a four-star prospect and the fourthrated cornerback in the 2020 class, according to 247 Sports’ composite rankings.

New Mexico QB’s indecent exposure charge dismissed

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. >> The case against a New Mexico quarterback charged with indecent exposure has been tossed out, a Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The Albuquerque Journal reported that charges against Sheriron Jones, 23, were dismissed after witnesses failed to show up for a trial. Jones was accused of showing his genitalia to a woman in a university parking structure in October.

Jones, who started seven games last year when New Mexico went 3-9, lost the starting job in preseason camp.
