Second-place in final relay propels Ridley boys to win

Sometimes it pays to be second. It did for Ridley Thursday.

Alex Boeckx, Mario Costa, Wyatt Shanks and Eric Tanzosh teamed up to take second in the 400 freestyle relay and that gave the Green Raiders the points they needed for a 93-92 Central League boys swimming victory over Garnet Valley.

Boeckx won the 200 IM,

100 free and anchored the

200 free relay to victory. Shanks also won the 100 back and led off the winning 200 medley relay team.

Tyler Baldino captured the 50 free and 100 fly, and led off the winning 400 free relay team for Garnet Valley. Griffin Young and Matthew Hurford were double winners for the Jags.

Springfiel­d 120, Upper Darby 65 Matthew Seifried won the 50-yard freestyle, anchored the 200 medley relay team to victory and led off the winning 200 freestyle relay squad pace the Cougars.

Michael Brattini (200 medley relay, 200 free relay, 400 free relay) also won three events, while Owen Seifried (200 medley relay,

100 freestyle) was a double winner for Springfiel­d.

Kevyn Daly 9200 IM) and Patrick Rankin (100 back) were the winners for the Royals.

In the Ches-Mont League: BISHOP SHANAHAN 104, SUN VALLEY 78 >> Timmy Gauzza, Nick Fursman, Josh Landis and Blaze Graham scored the only win for the Vanguards with a victory in the

200 medley relay.

Girls Swimming

Freshman Alena Chung and Mary Kubiak, and sophomore Kylie Carney won four events each to pace Springfiel­d to a 10875 Central League decision over Upper Darby.

Chung won the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly, and was on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams. Kubia and Carney were also on both of winning relay teams. Kubiak also won the 50 free and 100 backstroke, while Carney touched the wall first in the 500 free and 100 breaststro­ke.

Rylee Shanahan captured the diving and Emily Lehman, Olivia McConnell, Allison Ascareggi and Grace Purcell teamed up to win the 200 free relay for the Royals.

GARNET VALLEY 106, RIDLEY 75 >> Amy Townsend and Kiera Scudder were quadruple winners for the Jaguars. Townsend was on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams. She also won the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly. Scudder was on the winning medley and 200 free relays, and also touched the wall first in the 50, 200 and 500 freestyle.

In the Ches-Mont League:

BISHOP SHANAHAN 94, SUN VALLEY 89 >> Jenna Johnson won for events for the Vanguards. She was first in the 200 IM, 100 free and 100 backstroke, and was on the winning 200 free relay team that included Olivia Carr, Nicole Ferraccio and Keeley Durkin.

Durkin also won the 50 and 500 free, while Ferraccio was first in the 100 fly.

Wrestling

Marple Newtown used seven wins by pin in the first nine weight classes to hold off Penncrest in the Central League, 42-36.

All the contested matches were decided by fall.

Jasaiha Wilson (106) and Ryan McDonald (138) won by fall in 31 and 37 seconds, respective­ly. Hamza Elfernani (113), Alex Tenaglia (120), Jimmy Hally (145), Jimmy Nania (152) and Lane Ebersole (160) also recorded pins for the Tigers.

Ben Allen (126). Nico

Partsanaki­s (132), Matt Kirchgasse­r (170), Rodrigo Perez-Gsiba (182), Dimitri Partsanaki­s (220) and Damien martin (285) won by fall for the Lions.

Girls Basketball

Ellie Mueller celebrated her 18th birthday with a typical Ellie Mueller performanc­e.

The Radnor senior forward registered 25 points,

10 rebounds and four steals in a 49-39 Central League victory over Marple Newtown.

Brienne Williams chipped in with 10 points for the Raiders, who outscored the host Tigers in the second half, 23-15.

Haley Levy led the way for Marple with 17 points.

Elsewhere in the Central League:

GARNET VALLEY 59, UPPERR DARBY 26 >> The Jaguars (5-1,

3-1) raced out to a 23-2 lead after one quarter and never looked back.

Liesl Dentinger finished with six points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Mikayla Anderson and Kendall DiCamillo netted 10 points apiece for the Jags, who had 11 assists for the game.

Aubrey Ennis tallied eight points for the Royals. SPRINGFIEL­D 50, STRATH HAVEN 32 >> Rachel Conran banked four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 14 points for the Cougars (42, 4-0), who picked up consecutiv­e win. Springfiel­d erupted for 21 second-quarter points and were comfortabl­y ahead 43-19 after three periods.

Faith Raymond led the Panthers with 10 points.

In the Ches-Mont League: OXFORD 36, SUN VALLEY 34 >> The Vanguards led by as many as nine points in the third quarter. Freshman Jaina Preuhs had a strong game with 10 points and 10 boards, while Aliceia Whitfield also netted 10 points.
