100 Years Ago – 1919:
The meanest thief of the Christmas season has been found and when arrests are made in the case the full effect of the law will be solicited for these perverted criminals. Two men residing in Marcus Hook and to all appearances well-fortified with weekly wages to pay their Christmas expenses entered Lawn Croft Cemetery and tore out several small pine trees used as a decorative background for graves.
75 Years Ago – 1944:
Fifty-three years ago, in 1891, John Connors told the company he would work three days to see how he liked it. Last Monday he still wasn’t quite sure whether he would stay permanently. Today he was at his accustomed tasks in the shop of the Southern Pennsylvania Bus Co., 13th Street and Edgmont Avenue, Chester. “Guess I’ll stay a little while longer,” the 73-year-old car builder said. He started with the old Chester Street Railway in 1891 and, though inclined to be vague about staying, has worked under each succeeding owner company, the Chester Traction Co., the United Power and Transportation Co. and the present one.
50 Years Ago – 1969:
Sex education in the elementary schools and taxes were discussed by the Nether Providence School Board this week. Discussion of the pilot sex education program in the schools was begun when one of the spectators said she approved of the program but would have appreciated notice that it was being given. The “human growth and development” part of a health pilot program is taught by instructors from Lankenau Hospital, schools Superintendent Dr. James P. Harrison said.
25 Years Ago – 1994:
Wawa Inc. will unveil its “Convenience Store of the Future,” a unique combination of convenience and one-stop specialized shopping, today along Route 291 in Tinicum. The 4,780 square-foot store near the
Philadelphia International Airport will feature a broad spectrum of products and services, including a “Java Supremo” coffee bar, a center island produce case, and Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Wawa’s own Hoagie Works deli counter.
10 Years Ago – 2009:
The Boy Scout troop Fred Sach has led for more than a half a century is celebrating 79years of serving boys in the community. “I’ve been in scouting since
I was 12 years old,” said the 75-year-old Sach, the scoutmaster of Woodlyn Boy Scout Troop 43.
