100Years Ago – 1919:

From the editorial board – “The Christmas Spirit: The Salvation Army handed out Christmas cheer to over 800 persons. The Associated Charities gave to more than 500of the city’s poor. The post office did the largest business in the history of the office. Most of the industries and business houses of the city gladdened the hearts of their employees by making Wednesday pay day. Travel by train to and from this city was the heaviest in the history of the railroads. The trolleys were taxed to their capacity to carry the crowds on Wednesday.”

75Years Ago – 1944: The chief of the War Production Board, J.A. Krug, paid a flying visit to Sun Ship on Tuesday to “emphasize the demands of the battlefronts.” Touring key war production centers for the first time since his appointment to head the WPB, Krug came to Chester with J. Griffith Boardman, regional director of the board, to “get a good look at a real shipyard,” he said.

50Years Ago – 1969: A Christmas Day snowstorm was followed today by heavy rains, causing major flooding throughout Delaware County and portions of Delaware. The rain forced busy U.S. Route 1 (Baltimore Pike) to close in Middletown – which had an unofficial snowfall of 8inches – delayed commuter lines and caused some power failures.

25Years Ago – 1994: Tape will be rolling once a month at O’Flaherty’s Acoustic in Aston (their mailing address says Media, but we know it’s Aston!), as it joins three other clubs in an exciting new set of PRISM programs spotlighting local talent in local places. On the first Friday of each month, WMMR (93.3FM) deejay Helen Leicht will present an overview of the local music scene. Leicht’s show premieres Jan. 6, and her first guests will be the punk group, The A’s, and Sid Mark, the world’s ranking Frank Sinatra expert whose WWDB (96.5) Sinatra programs have made him a “Old Blue Eyes’’ a local staple.
