Crosby scores in overtime, Penguins beat Red Wings

DETROIT >> Sidney Crosby scored a powerplay goal 1:33 into overtime to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 Friday night.

It was Crosby’s third goal in three games since returning from a 28-game absence because of a core muscle injury. Bryan Rust also scored for the Penguins in the third period after Filip Zadina put Detroit ahead in the second. All three goals came with the man advantage.

Crosby scored by redirectin­g the puck past goalie Jimmy Howard from in front of the net off a pass from Evgeni Malkin. Pittsburgh was on the power play after Detroit’s Luke Glendening took Jared McCann down away from the play and was called for interferen­ce.

Howard made 35 saves but remains winless since Oct. 29.

The Penguins rebounded from a 4-1 loss to Boston on Thursday night. They have not lost back-to-back games since late November. DUCKS 2, HURRICANES 1 >> Sam Steel scored on a breakaway 1:36 into overtime to lift Anaheim over Carolina.

Erik Gudbranson also had a goal and Ryan Miller stopped 25 shots for Anaheim, which enters a nine-day break following consecutiv­e wins.

Sebastian Aho scored and James Reimer made 35 saves for Carolina.

Canes Hamilton breaks leg

RALEIGH, N.C. >> Carolina Hurricanes All-Star defenseman Dougie Hamilton is out indefinite­ly with a broken left leg. The team announced Friday that Hamilton broke his left fibula during a loss at Columbus on Thursday night and underwent surgery Friday.

Hamilton was hurt in the second period while chasing down a puck along the wall in the neutral zone when he was tangled up with Columbus’ Kevin Stenlund. He fell awkwardly with his leg bent underneath him and didn’t return.

“It’s a big loss but all teams go through this at some point and we’ll see how we respond,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said.

Bruins send Backes to minors

BOSTON >> The Boston Bruins have waived 14-year veteran David Backes.

Backes has scored 245 goals with 309 assists in 944 NHL games, spending the first 10 years of his career with the Blues and the last four in Boston. A two-time U.S. Olympian, he was an all-star in 2011, and the following season he was the runner-up in the Selke Award voting.

The 35-year-old Backes has just one goal and two assists in 16 games with the Bruins this season.
