100 Years Ago – 1920:

For the purpose of completing arrangemen­t for Chester Night at Lu Lu Temple in April, a meeting of the Chester Shriners will be held tonight in Masonic Hall. It is proposed to make the night the biggest local affair in the history of Lu Lu and all the Chester Nobles have been invited to attend the meeting.

75 Years Ago – 1945:

Billy Deemer, 13-yearold eighth-grader in the Marcus Hook School, today becomes the youngest winner of the $5first prize money in the Chester Times’ weekly tipster contest. Billy, who lives at

1006 Yates Ave., Marcus Hook, won when he called in the story of Charles A. Halvorsen, 19-year-old sailor, whose mother, Mrs. Charles W. Halvorsen, 1120 Washington St., Marcus Hook, kept up the Christmas tree until her son could return last Friday. It fulfilled a promise made when her son left after a

30-day furlough on Dec.

50 Years Ago – 1970:

The possibilit­y of two new local taxes – a 1 percent income tax and a $10 per capita tax – was raised by the Darby Township School Board Tuesday night to help dig the district out of its financial pit. By narrow votes the board approved motions to advertise its intention to levy the new taxes as a means of solving the district’s debt of more than $500,000.

25 Years Ago – 1995:

Just in case any obscenitie­s filter into Darby Borough, a new ordinance would take care of banning that. Council will vote March 1 on the “Exotic Dance Ordinance” which targets any obscenity – from displaying it to drawing it; performing it to hiring it. “I think it’s a good idea to protect ourselves before something comes into the borough,” said Councilwom­an Paula Brown. Anyone convicted under the new ordinance would face a fine up to $600 or no more than 30 days in jail.

10 Years Ago – 2010:

There was no sign of waning in their fight to keep St. Joseph School open as parents and interested parishione­rs gathered Wednesday night at the Collingdal­e Firehouse to discuss further options and plans. “So far, we have been hit with two blizzards and other things have happened, but we know that we are doing the right thing to try and keep our school open,” said parent Mary Ann Donner. The group will hold a third protest Friday at the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul, Philadelph­ia.
