100Years Ago – 1920: A deal was closed this afternoon for sale of the properties at 504and 506Market

St. for $90,000. Lillian H. Levey, who conducts a jewelry store in 504, is the new owner. The property was sold by Kingsley Montgomery and William S. Blakely Jr. The building is better known to the citizens of Chester as American Hall, a number of lodges meeting on the third floor. The store at 506is occupied by the Colonial Restaurant.

75Years Ago – 1945: Six hundred gathered Sunday morning at 6:45a.m. on the lawn of the home of Katherine M. Stevenson, 2507Chestn­ut St., overlookin­g the quiet running waters of Ridley Creek for the third Easter sunrise service held there. At the same time a large number of people – an estimated 500or 600– gathered at the Lawn Croft Cemetery for a sunrise service there, one of the only two outdoor services held in the Chester area.

50Years Ago – 1970: About 3,500 commuters of Short Line Inc., West Chester-based bus line, had to find other means of transporta­tion again today as a drivers’ strike entered its second day with “no negotiatio­ns” planned. The bus line services Delaware County commuters from Philadelph­ia to Wilmington and from Chester to West Chester, while making stops in Aston, Concord and Bethel. Warren Cash, president of Lodge 1009, United Transporta­tion Union, said that the 39drivers would remain off the job until their $1.10an hour wage increase demands are met. Drivers now make $2.51 an hour.

25Years Ago – 1995: Throughout her young life, Kendra Abdulwali had been told work hard and you will succeed.

Last fall, it seemed her hard work and persistenc­e had paid off. Kendra had earned recognitio­n as one of the top high school students in the nation – along with a full four-year college scholarshi­p to Howard University. But the Chester teen may never get the chance to get to go to college because Chester Upland School District personnel bungled the simple task of filling out and returning required scholarshi­p informatio­n.

10Years Ago – 2010: U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa., picked up a major labor endorsemen­t from the Pennsylvan­ia AFL-CIO in his re-election bid against U.S. Rep. Joseph Sestak, D-7. Specter now has the backing of about two dozen state and local labor organizati­ons, including the Pennsylvan­ia

State Education Associatio­n, United Auto Workers and Service Employees Internatio­nal Union. Sestak has also picked up some notable organizati­ons, including the National Organizati­on for Women and United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1776.
