- – COLIN AINSWORTH

100Years Ago – 1920: The interior finish of the Colonial Court House, being restored to its original condition through the generosity of Gov. William C. Sproul, is fast nearing completion. Architect Clarence W. Brazer has taken particular pains that the mouldings on the woodwork are as nearly as possible like those executed by the carpenters in 1724. One modern innovation that Gov. Sproul has desired is the installation of electricity.

75Years Ago – 1945: Two complete Republican slates for the June 19 primary – a McClure slate and an antiMcClure slate – were in the field in Delaware County on Monday evening, the deadline for filing. While the Democrats ignored two row offices in the county, those of controller and coroner, they entered a complete ticket for city council and school board in Chester.

50Years Ago – 1970: Llanerch Country Club, West Chester Pike and Manoa Road, Haverford Township, severely damaged by fire Wednesday night, will be rebuilt, club President Richard Gilgunas said today. The cause of the fire, which damaged the interior of the club house, is still under investigation.

25Years Ago – 1995: They look too young to have to be thinking about drug pushers and peer pressure to smoke and drink. Dressed in baggy pants or jeans, 125sixth graders strode across the stage in E.T. Richardson Middle School’s auditorium in Springfield earlier this year to receive graduation certificates from the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program under the voluntary direction of Mark Cottom, 38, a Springfield patrolman and juvenile officer. A uniformed Cottom currently gives the 40-minute presentations five mornings a week to five different classes, with 140sixth graders currently in the program.

10Years Ago – 2010: From the opinion page: If the Widener students at the Theta Chi fraternity represent the younger generation in our country, those of the present and senior generations can take comfort. The former home of Theta Chi was being razed to facilitate the academic goals of the university. Having been a charter member of the fraternity some 63years ago, I was invited to attend the gathering. When I walked in, the basic membership had that look of wonderment, appearing to know little of my plans to attend. However, after I was introduced, they literally lined up to identify themselves with a welcoming handshake. These very special young men made an 85-year-old fraternity brother have a very special day. Regarding the fiber of the younger generation, I left with one impression: All will be well under their watch. OLIVER ARMITAGE, ‘49, Media.
