100 Years Ago – 1920: America’s most notorious slack was again the object of a nationwide search today. Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, millionair­e auto racer, aviator and convicted draft evader, was still at liberty 21hours after he walked out of his mother’s mansion where was supposed to have been under the custody of two noncommiss­ioned officers, military guards. Bergdoll, whose home was for many years in Delaware County, figured prominentl­y in escapades here and was on several occasions a defendant in Media court.

75 Years Ago – 1945:

The long battle over teacher salary increases in Chester Public Schools moved nearer a solution as members of the Board of Education approved increments to become effective with the new budget. Terms of the settlement were reported to include an increase of starting salary from $1,400to $1,600 annually and an increase in the maximum from

$2,200 to $2,6000.

50 Years Ago – 1970: A

23-year-old man underwent emergency surgery at Crozer-Chester Medical Center after being critically wounded in a taproom fight hours earlier. The man received four gunshots wounds in an argument at the G&J bar in the 600block of Morton

Avenue. The victim and a woman were attempting to break up a fight when the bartender struck the woman about the head and face with a gun. As the victim tried to wrest it away, the bartender fired at him.

25 Years Ago – 1995:

The state-appointed recovery team from the Pittsburgh law firm of Eckert, Seamans, Cherin & Mellott has begun the process of formulatin­g a plan for Chester’s financial recovery under the status of a distressed city, planned to be presented in the fall. According to Councilman Charles McLaughlin, the team will delve into personnel and economic issues.

10 Years Ago – 2010: Less than 24 hours after gunfire took the life of a

17-year-old boy on their streets, hundreds of Chester residents marched Saturday to protest the rising tide of violence in the area. Saturday’s march was planned several weeks ago after a series of violent incidents. Those incidents include an unsolved May

5 murder which led event organizer Jamilia Sheriff to take action. “I lost my friend, Larry Carter. I lost my cousin, who was like a brother to me,” Sheriff said.
