100 Years Ago – 1920:
As the Republican National Convention opened today in Chicago, Pennsylvania continued to hold the limelight with its boom for Gov. Sproul. Led by Brigadier General Atterbury, a steering committee has been named to “arrange details of organization for the purpose of furthering the candidacy for Gov. Sproul.” With a minor exception all of the Pennsylvanians were working together to bring about the nomination of the governor. Mayor Moore of Philadelphia spent a busy day furthering the Sproul boom.
75 Years Ago – 1945: “Prudence dictates keeping prepared and the danger of war lies not in being prepared but in lack of preparedness” was the advice Vice Admiral Edward Lull Cochrane, USN, Chief of the Bureau of Ships, gave to the 351graduates of Chester High School at the
71st annual commencement. Cochrane listed seven person traits which are needed in going out into the world: Courage, personal integrity, co-operation, loyalty, reliability, self-reliance and charity. He added that the graduates also must improve their personal confidence.
50 Years Ago – 1970: A 23-year-old Philadelphia woman became the first female in six years to escape from Delaware County Prison when she scaled a drain pipe Saturday to the top of a 10-foot stone wall and leaped in freedom.
She had been confined since May 14, awaiting trial on charges of burglary, larceny, receiving stolen goods and forgery.
25 Years Ago – 1995: A group of investors is aggressively seeking rezoning of the Pulsations property for a 312-unit retirement community. The proposal offers township officials a possible solution to their legal and financial woes with Pulsations, the nightclub that staged topless dancing last year and spawned a community outcry against adult entertainment. “We like the concept,” said supervisor Vice Chairman Robert Mench. However, concerns about the proposed sixstory building height and a density of 37units per acre could bog the project down in negotiations.
10 Years Ago – 2010: The Franklin Mint development team met with Middletown council’s land planning committee Monday night to get feedback on its request for a zoning change needed to move its proposed redevelopment project forward, and it got plenty from a standingroom-only turnout of residents. Traffic was the key concern.
