100 Years Ago – 1920: Following a drunken brawl, a woman was shot and slightly wounded by a boarder in her home at Boy’s Lane and Cartertown Road yesterday and after being treated for the injury at the Chester Hospital was arrested together with her husband. Jealousy is said to have promoted the shooting and took place after a craps game, when the woman and her husband were in an argument with the shooter, who escaped police.

75 Years Ago – 1945:

Delaware Countians, water-soaked and flood weary, got their first peep at the sun shortly after noon today, following one of the most disastrous rainstorms of this century and the worst flood in 102 years. Meanwhile the toll of flood damage found two families homeless today and two mills, the Yorkshire and Browns mills shut down.

50 Years Ago – 1970: The West End Burned Children’s Fund founded Mrs. Patrician Momot, of 1245 Harshaw Road, Chester Township, and her sister Mrs. Delores Mount of 1575 Market St., Lower Chichester, and Mrs. Bert Partinoble of Nolan Street, Chester, have been joined by several county groups to support the families of six children burned a July 6 explosion. They include the Felton and Friendship fire companies, the Chester FOP and respective ladies auxiliarie­s, St. Hedwig’s parishione­rs, the Polish National Alliance Group 650, Polish National Alliance Circle of Delaware County, and residents of Brookhaven and Aston.

25 Years Ago – 1995: A contingent of federal and state environmen­tal officials were on the hot seat last night, as an angry crowd of Chester residents delivered their message loud and clear no longer will they tolerate the environmen­tal injustices that have plagued this community for years. About 100 people packed city council chambers for a public forum on the permitting of the proposed Soil Remediatio­n facility and the clustering of similar industries in Chester.

10 Years Ago – 2010: The morning Chester opened its soccer stadium, PPL Park, Mayor Wendell N. Butler Jr. said he took a stroll along the nature walk that runs along the waterfront. For years, Chester residents didn’t have much access to the waterfront, unless they worked at one of the factories that lined the river. As Chester attempts to reinvent itself Butler told attendees that the city is doing so with the environmen­t in mind.
