100 Years Ago – 1920: Concerned in a shooting affray early last evening at the hotel of Henry Nacrelli, Third and Reaney streets, Chester, two men were held without bail to await the outcome of the victim’s injuries. The victim of the gunplay is Howard “Cack” Ford, a resident of Jeffrey Street. He occupies a cot at the Chester Hospital and is suffering a bullet wound of the stomach. His wound is considered serious. Details of the claimed preceding argument were lacking today, according to the police, who said the men were all intoxicate­d.

75 Years Ago – 1945: With a critical gasoline shortage developing in many mid-western cities today as CIO oil workers left their jobs in refineries from Texas to Ohio, county motorists had no immediate worries, and can enjoy their weekend auto trip without fear. A survey of service stations in Chester’s “Gasoline Alley” this morning disclosed that all the stations have a normal supply on hand.

50 Years Ago – 1970: The Philadelph­ia Electric Co. today requested Delaware County commercial and residentia­l customers to voluntaril­y curtail their use of electricit­y to avert a repeat of Tuesday’s power cutoff caused by a recordbrea­king heat wave. The last day of summer was the hottest one of the year as the mercury hit 94 causing an increased demand for electricit­y. The East Coast power emergency affected 34,600custome­rs here.

25 Years Ago – 1995: At Penn-Delco’s study session last night, Aston Police Chief David Hollingswo­rth and Officer Thomas Hardy described an eight-month new program for Sun Valley sophomores designed to teach them safety topics and discuss consequenc­es of illegal activity once a month in social studies classes. Hardy said that episodes of vandalism and fighting have occurred in Penn-Delco communitie­s, much of it the result of a group of current and former Sun Valley students who call themselves the “Skull Cap Posse.”

10 Years Ago – 2010: Two grandsons of the founder of Taylor Hospital and a bevy of other family members were on hand Wednesday to participat­e in the 100th anniversar­y ceremony of the founding of the hospital at its 100th anniversar­y garden, Chester Pike near Swarthmore Avenue, Ridley Park. A time capsule was buried at the site with items including informatio­n on the hospital’s 75th anniversar­y celebratio­n and announceme­nts of the hospital’s 100th anniversar­y.
