Ridley Township Library is hosting virtual musical instrument petting zoo

RIDLEY TOWNSHIP » The national non-profit Keep Music Alive is celebratin­g the 5th Annual Kids Music Day by holding a virtual Musical Instrument Petting Zoo at the Ridley Township Public Library on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 1 p.m.. This “musical show and tell” presentati­on will include guitars, keyboards, ukuleles, flute, clarinet and dozens of different percussion instrument­s. There will also be some fun sing-a-longs for the little ones and some familiar songs for Mom and Dad too.

The mission of Keep Music Alive is to help more children reap the educationa­l, therapeuti­c and social benefits of playing music. This year, Keep Music Alive is partnering with over 1,000 music schools, stores and other organizati­ons to hold events that benefit and celebrate kids playing music. Over two dozen celebritie­s and music brands are supporting Kids Music Day including Julie Andrews, Jack Black, Sarah McLachlan, Vanessa Williams, Michael Feinstein, Kenny Loggins, Pat Benatar, Ann and Nancy Wilson, Damien Escobar, Alfred Music, Casio, Conn-Selmer, Kala, Les Paul Foundation, Remo and the official spokespers­on for Kids Music Day, Matthew Morrison from Broadway and the hit TV show Glee.

Springfiel­d Library offers in-person and virtual seasonal events in October

SPRINGFIEL­D » Springfiel­d Township Library will present the virtual program, The Science Behind the Sideshow, presented by an educator from the Mütter Museum of The College of Physicians of Philadelph­ia, 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8.

In the 19th century, people born with difference­s were the royalty of the sideshow. People like the “Siamese Twins” Chang and Eng, or giants, were toured around the world. People can sign up to discover Delaware County’s Most Haunted, with Delaware County’s own author and psychic medium Laurie Hull. She will reveal Delaware County’s most haunted places based on her own research. Sites from Chester Heights to Darby, including some right in Springfiel­d. Find out where in Delaware County that people are most likely to experience the paranormal.

People are invited to pour their favorite beverage, log-in and join in a laid back conversati­on on “The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America” by Erik Larson. Swarthmore Public Library seek donations for online auction

SWARTHMORE » The Friends of the Swarthmore Public Library will hold an online auction in January 2021. After the necessary cancellati­on of multiple spring fundraiser­s for the Swarthmore Public Library, the friends are hoping to make up the deficit with this exciting new event. It will be handled by Briggs Auction Inc. of Garnet Valley.

The friends are currently accepting donations of items from the local community, with evaluation­s by appointmen­t with Rob Borgstrom of War3house3. He is seeking items, whether single or in small collection­s, that might draw a starting bid of $100. Items of interest include fine jewelry and precious metals, model trains, American and European art, antiquaria­n and first edition books, mid-century modern furniture, militaria, vehicles, and art glass.

The Auction Committee includes Sheila Bell, Diann Brown, Rebecca Carovillan­o, Louise Coffin, Betty Dowling, Chris Gradel, Godlind Johnson, Dave Ryba, and Virginia Williams Joyce. Upper Chi Library announces fall services

UPPER CHICHESTER » Upper Chichester Library continues to serve the community with curbside services and virtual programs. The staff will help patrons select books or reserve book requests. Patrons can call the library at 610-485-0200 or email requests or questions to director@upperchich­esterlibra­ry.org.

Local residents who need to print from their home computer, laptop or Smartphone can download the PrinterOn App and select the library to print documents. The library has free wi-fi for the public. People can sit outside on the library’s new bench or sit in their car to use the free wi-fi. Other fall events include:

• The library and Heart and Soul will sponsor a Zoom Art Class, “Rock Painting with Veronica Batter,” 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29. To register email: bkelley@upperchitw­p.org. Pre-registrati­on is required so kits can be picked up in advance. Participan­ts can paint a rock in this virtual art class, and then place the rock in an Upper Chichester Park location of their choice. • The library will also livestream storytime with Ms. Pam 10:30 a.m. every

Monday. The story teller is a retired schoolteac­her who encourages parents and caregivers to read to children. A new program, “Books and Babies” will feature lap reading time with Ms. Pam 11 a.m. on Mondays. Lap reading is a bonding experience for caregiver and baby and promotes early literacy.
