100Years Ago – 1920: Frequent fires on dumps and the practice of some persons using the place for the dumping of wagon loads of garbage has led the Chester Department of Public Safety to take action. Unless steps are taken by those owners to prevent the practice, the dumps will be closed. During the summer months, the calling out of the district fire companies to extinguish piles of burning rubbish on the dumps, some of them in residentia­l sections of the city, has been a frequent occurrence.

75Years Ago – 1945:

Seventy-five correspond­ents and club publicity chairmen, presenting women’s organizati­ons in the county, were the guests today of the Chester Times at a luncheon in the YWCA. Guests of honor at the luncheon were Miss Nan L. Dutton, of Media, Times correspond­ent now in her 51st year of work for the paper and Mrs. S. Blair Luckie, widow of the county’s most famed dentist and the area’s best-know club woman.

50Years Ago – 1970:

The price of the Delaware County Daily Times will increase to 15 cents for a single copy and 75 cents a week for home delivery, effective Monday. General Manager Ronald A. Hedley said the increase is necessary to meet rising costs involved in the production and distributi­on of a quality newspaper. Daily Times carrier boys and dealers will receive an equitable share of the increase, Hedley said.

25Years Ago – 1995:

Millbourne council opened bids for a new nine-man fire truck at last week’s meeting. The awarding of the bid may have to wait until the Caldor bankruptcy status is reeled in, however. According to James Newell, a consultant with the Department of Community Affairs, advising council during its recovery from being declared a distressed community, a new fire truck would not be necessary until the Sears property is developed.

10Years Ago – 2010: Aston commission­ers recently approved an amended final land developmen­t plan for The Residences at Star Hill, an assisted-living complex to be constructe­d by the J. Grace Co. at the terminus of North Manor Drive. The estimated $3 million project, which will be built on

9.6 acres and total 76,757 square feet, is scheduled to open in 2012. Grace has partnered with CrozerKeys­tone and the Neumann University nursing program to provide services for residents.
