Other Times
100Years Ago – 1920:
Heavy fines for drunks in police court seems to be serving as stimulant instead of preventative. Classes are growing each day, exceeding the record breakers during the war-period, when Chester entertained a large “floating” population. Three more $30 drunks were included in the class that greeted Magistrate Elliot today. The just-plain variety were not set-back so hard, escaping with a $10 fine, but those who became obstreperous were given the full assessment. “Don’t you fellows now that it’s expensive to come here drunk,” asked Elliot. “Yes,” responded the leader of the class, “but it only takes one drink of some of the stuff sold in some of the hotels to make you forget you’re living. It certainly has a wicked sting.”
75Years Ago – 1945:
Closing of the “Big Inch” and “Little Big Inch” pipelines this month will lead to an increase in shipping in the Port of Chester as tankers place the lines in the transportation of crude oil from Gulf coast refineries. The stupendous total of 70,808,185 barrels of crude from the “Big Inch” pipeline flowed into the Marcus Hook and Trainer refineries of Sun Oil and Sinclair Refining Co. That’s 2,973,943,770 gallons, which refined into aviation gasoline, as much of it was, played a big part in America’s victories overseas.
50Years Ago – 1970:
Two men were arrested on drug charges at 6:45 p.m. Sunday, after Chester police stopped to investigate suspicious activity in the 12th and Crosby streets area of Deshong Park. The 19-yearold Brookhaven man and 22-year-old city man both had fresh needle marks on their arms, police said.
25Years Ago – 1995:
Despite belt-tightening measures implemented earlier this year, Chester will run out of cash to pay its employees in December - unless it stops paying all other bills. Although the state-appointed recovery team is banking on the city receiving an unfunded debt loan of about $9 million to pay back bills, Councilman Dominic Pileggi yesterday voiced concern about another matter - the city’s cash flow.
10Years Ago – 2010:
Nether Providence Commissioner Mike Dougherty said PennDOT has told him the 22nd Street Bridge, which crosses from Ridley into Chester, will be closed for renovations beginning in March, with detours to Bullens Lane and Providence Road through the township.
