MEDIA » The year 2020 has been tough for everyone, especially locally owned shops and restaurants. This year, shopping local is vital to their survival. As the holiday season approaches, Delco residents are encouraged to shop local and Keep the Cheer Here!

In partnership with Visit Delco PA, the Delaware County Commerce Center, and the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, Delaware County Council is launching the Keep the Cheer Here! social media campaign.

Residents are encouraged to put on their masks and visit a Delco shop or restaurant, and then post a picture or check-in using the hash tag #ShopDelco on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn and tag @DelcoChamber or @KeeptheCheerHereDelco now through Dec. 30. Every post is an entry into the drawing for gift cards to businesses across the county!

“This is a fun and easy way to show some love and support for our Delco businesses who have been greatly impacted during the pandemic,” said Delaware County Councilwoman Elaine Paul Schaefer. “Delco business owners are our family, friends and neighbors. We need to support them. Put your money where your home is!”

Winners will be drawn each Wednesday and will be contacted by the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce and mailed or emailed the gift cards.

“Delco has incredible shops and restaurants right here in our own backyard,” said Delaware County Chamber of Commerce President Trish McFarland. “Instead of shopping at big box stores or online sites, support our local community at a time when they need it the most. Keep the cheer here!”

Residents are reminded to follow public health guidance while supporting shops and restaurants by staying home if they’re sick, wearing masks, social distancing and frequently washing and sanitizing hands. They should also take advantage of curbside pickup, online orders and delivery, and outdoor dining, when available. Delco businesses have worked hard to keep employees, customers and the community safe and residents need to do their part to protect the business community and also do everything they can to allow businesses to stay open.

Pandemic support available for school age child care

Child Care Professionals Network recently announced that Delaware County Council has unanimously approved and funded its proposal for $2,000,000 for Delco School Age Child Care COVID Support. These resources are for families who have found themselves with additional child care related costs as a result of needing school aged care for their children who are not able to attend school full time due to the pandemic.

CCPN worked closely with Early Learning Resource Center 15 and the Delaware County Women’s Commission on this project. According to information provided by the ELRC there are approximately 320 programs open and accepting children on a daily basis. It is estimated that there may be upwards of 3000 families needing support. High quality care can cost up to $60 per day per child. This funding will provide a portion of those costs directly to the licensed center in Delaware County where the children attend. Families will be responsible for any additional costs.

Child Care programs will be sent payments directly for the children who are cared for and not to the parents. This program will be modeled after programs that are presently in place in neighboring counties.

Families and providers can review eligibility requirements and complete their applications at ccpnpa.org/covid-support. Questions can be directed to ccpnpa.org@ gmial.com. Applications will be accepted from now until Dec. 23.
