100 Years Ago – 1920: Industries in the Chester-Eddystone-Marcus Hook vicinity have locked their gates for periods varying from three to five days, and for an extended holiday, at least, the home of shipbuildi­ng, locomotive­s, silk, the manufactur­e of chemicals, steel, etc. will be depleted of an formidable army of artisans. Thousands are turning gladly to the hearthston­es of their parents, sweetheart, and sweetheart-wives in widely distant localities. They’re just going home – that’s all.

75 Years Ago – 1945: The Chester Municipal Water Authority will “come up with a satisfacto­ry answer” to its quest for an inland water supply – “before long – and that won’t be too long,” was the assurance given by Frank Friel of the engineerin­g firm of Albright and Friel, Inc., who was the principal speaker Saturday at the annual Christmas party given the 66 employees of the Authority. He predicted the new supply will meet requisites of “clear, sparkling, soft, noncorrosi­ve water.”

50 Years Ago – 1970: Two assistant district attorneys have been sworn in as Delaware County Common Pleas judges. Assistant district attorneys Robert A.

Wright of Chester Township and Dominic D. Jerome of Haverford were sworn in Thursday by county Judge Francis A.J. Catania in his chambers. At the same time, Judge John V. Diggins received his official commission as president judge of the county court. Wright becomes the first black judge in the county’s history.

25 Years Ago – 1995: Trash collectors may be giving some Bethel residents a wake-up call for the next few months to work around ongoing sewer constructi­on. Supervisor John Adkinson urged households in the constructi­on area to put out their trash the night before expected collection to ensure it is picked up.

10 Years Ago – 2010: Representi­ng the Pennsylvan­ia Institute of Technology student council, Zachary DiFonzo and Marylin Baruwa presented the city of Chester with five large boxes of toys Wednesday to be distribute­d to a family in need. “A lot of our students are from Chester,” said Baruwa, noting that Councilwom­an Marrea Walker-Smith teaches at the Moylanbase­d school. “A lot of the talk is about how Chester needs some hope, especially during the holidays.”
