100 Years Ago – 1921: Proceeding the passage of an ordinance abolishing the office of Supervisor of City Hall and Public Buildings, the resignation of James B. Welsh, holder of the position, having been accepted a recent meeting, City Council yesterday afternoon passed an ordinance providing for the creating of an office – that of Custodian of the Old City Hall in place of Supervisors, this action following the appointment of John Grayson to the position, at a salary of
$1,000 per annum.
75 Years Ago – 1946: Allocations of $27,889 have been made to Delaware County governmental units by the State PostWar Planning Commission for the purpose of financing improvement plans. The Chester Municipal Authority received an allocation of $5,000 for new water supply plans. Largest allocation went to Upper Darby Township School District: $12,366 for remodeling the senior high school building.
50 Years Ago – 1971:
Delaware County and its 49 communities could be in for millions of “no-strings attached” federal dollars if President Nixon can manage to garner enough congressional support to pass his $5-billion revenuesharing proposal unveiled Tuesday. Municipalities would receive closed to
$20 million under Nixon’s proposal with the bulk of this going to Upper Darby
($541,322) and Chester
($493,978). The county government would receive more than $1.5 million.
25 Years Ago – 1996:
Talk of a tuba at the Garnet Valley School’s Board’s finance committee meeting sparked some lively discussion of how the district should be managing its money. Superintendent Anthony Costello said instruments should be considered a capital expense, given their longevity, prompting balking from some board members. No decision was made on how to best fund
it, however.
10 Years Ago – 2011:
The former fourth-grade teacher wanted for several burglaries in Delaware County allegedly had a stolen handgun in his possession when he was arrested in New Jersey Wednesday. An Evesham Township police officer was on routine patrol on Evans Road in Marlton when the former Amosland School teacher drove by, alerting the officer’s tag reader which came back with an active arrest warrant. The 30-year-old teacher abruptly quit his job at the Ridley Township school last April.
