Philadelphia Archbishop Nelson Pérez visited Monsignor Bonner & Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School in Drexel Hill last week to celebrate Mass for the school community in the Anthony F. Frederico, Class of 1969, Auditorium. Rev. Joseph Zaleski, Bonner & Prendie’s campus minister, was the concelebrant.

During the Mass, Pérez used a crozier and presider’s chair that belonged to Archbishop Edmond Prendergast. The chair is engraved with Prendergast’s coat of arms and was blessed by the archbishop. Prendergast was the third archbishop of Philadelphia and the founder of St. Vincent’s Orphanage, which went on to become a girls’ high school and was later named after him.

Pérez also used a chalice that was recently given to the school by the family of Rev. Augustine Esposito, OSA. Father Gus died in early January and was president of the school from 2002-2009.

The Mass was streamed live on Monsignor Bonner & Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School’s Facebook Page @MBAPCHS and on the archbishop’s Facebook page @ArchbishopPerez. Following Mass, the archbishop toured Bonner & Prendie, led by members of the student council.

Delco Bar Association receives awards from Pa. Bar Association

The Pennsylvania Bar Association presented County Bar Recognition Awards virtually to the Delaware County Bar Association during the 55th Annual Seminar of the Conference of County Bar Leaders on Feb. 25.

Recognized for its COVID-19 Emergency Committee and Community Outreach Committee virtual events, the Delaware County Bar Association is one of 20 local bar associations in Pennsylvania honored this year for sponsoring projects that improve the legal profession, justice system or community. The awards are presented annually by the PBA.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the business closures which began last March, association President Robert Kelly Jr. created a COVID-19 Emergency Committee tasked with ensuring ongoing operations of the bar association, facilitating communication with the court and keeping members apprised of judicial procedures and communicating relevant information to the public. Because of the hard work of the committee members, the association was able to transition immediately to providing virtual services to its members, and a series of community education programs were developed and offered to the public at no cost. The committee continues to function to ensure that the association serves its members effectively and fulfills its mission.

The Delaware County Bar Association Community Outreach Committee developed a series of public information virtual events/ webinars to educate member attorneys and the general public about issues related to employment law, education law, real estate and landlord/tenant law, and other relevant topics during the COVID-19 pandemic. These virtual events have been very successful, and the Community Outreach Committee plans to continue offering programs in 2021.

The Conference of County Bar Leaders, whose membership includes leaders from county bar associations throughout the state and from the PBA, organizes a yearly educational conference focusing on the exchange of innovative bar association projects and ideas, and on the development of mutually-beneficial relationships among bar leaders that improve the legal profession.

Founded in 1895, the Pennsylvania Bar Association strives to promote justice, professional excellence and respect for the law; improve public understanding of the legal system; facilitate access of legal services; and serve the lawyer members of the state’s largest organized bar association.
