100 Years Ago – 1921:
Sensational charges were made today in Chester Police Court by Chief Deavenport in the hearings of seven alleged proprietors of speakeasies in the Fifth Ward and arrest of 21 inmates Saturday night. While more than 20 gallons of liquor, Jamaica ginger, dope and other “shocks” were confiscated by the police, the charges of selling liquor without a license were withdrawn and all the defendants arraigned on the disorderly charge.
75 Years Ago – 1946:
A “strictly GI” candidate entered the race today for the 1945 Republican gubernatorial nomination. He is former Staff Sgt. Carl
E. Mau, 35, publisher of the Marcus Hook Herald. His “19-point GI streamlined program” includes
“an ‘appreciation bonus’ of
$1 per day for all veterans who were in the service from Pearl Harbor Day to V-J Day; legalization of horse-racing in Pennsylvania and encouragement of the building of race tracks; removal of the government from ‘the liquor stores and turning this business over to its citizens.’”
50 Years Ago – 1971: Residents of Delaware County who served with the 83rd Infantry Division in World War II are being sought for a special anniversary celebration in August. The division, known as “Thunderbolt,”
participated in five major European campaigns.
25 Years Ago – 1996: A teenager told Aston police he came face-to-face with the cougar Monday night when his all-terrain vehicle stalled in the woods and he turned to find the cat barrelling toward him. In a panic, Lee Carlen of Upton Road got the motor running again and high-tailed it out of there along the Fire Trail behind the Valleybrook homes. For a harrowing few seconds as he fumbled to turn the ignition, the
19-year-old remembers hearing himself talk out loud to his maker. Carlen wrote a report on cougars at Sun Valley High School.
He knew the cat’s heart couldn’t take long-distance running.
10 Years Ago – 2011: The Delaware County Republican Party has picked its ponies for the 2011 county council race and announced county Councilman Tom McGarrigle, Concord Supervisors Vice Chairwoman Colleen Morrone and county Solicitor John McBlain as the endorsed candidates. “This is a group of candidates with an ample amount of experience balancing municipal budgets and keeping taxes low,” said party Chairman Andy Reilly.
