100 Years Ago – 1921: Jewels valued at $3,000 were reported stolen at an early hour this morning during a daring holdup at Sixth and Sproul streets, Chester. Mrs. Ida Smith, of 17 W. Eighth St., and her daughter, Miss Fannie Smith, were the victims. The theft took place at

1:45 o’clock as the couple were returning to their home after a visit to Philadelph­ia. Both robbers were armed, according to Mrs. Smith, who says the men made their escape in a waiting automobile.

75 Years Ago – 1946:

A fine of $500, with the alternativ­e of spending one year in prison, was the sentence given by Judge Albert Dutton MacDade to the former manager of a state liquor store who pleaded guilty to selling a taproom owner more than his quota of whiskey and pocketing some $244. The Collingdal­e resident, who had been manager of the Prospect Park store for a year, admitted selling nine extra cases of liquor to the Essington bar, in June and July 1944.

50 Years Ago – 1971: A raging fire pushed along by a steady wind damaged seven stores and shop and threatened a bank Friday night in the main business district in Marcus Hook. At least 16firemen were injured, most of them by smoke inhalation, during the five-hour fire that practicall­y wiped out a portion of the central businesses area. The general alarm fire was fought by about 300 firemen from 11 fire companies in Delaware County and several from neighborin­g communitie­s in Delaware.

25 Years Ago – 1996:

Behind 39points from Kobe Bryant - and 23-for-29 shooting from the foul line - the Aces earned a matter of respect and their first shot at a state title in 53years with a 77-69victory over the Clippers last night in overtime in front of a soldout crowd at the Palestra. 10 Years Ago – 2011: About 40resident­s turned out at a meeting recently to discuss with Morton Borough Council how to solve the problem of parking on their streets when they are competing with SEPTA commuters for those valuable spots. Councilman Sheldon Blunt, armed with permit parking regulation­s from other municipali­ties, told residents the meeting’s purpose was to get their input.
