100 Years Ago – 1921:

Chester Mayor William T. Ramsey, cooperatin­g with Mayor Moore, of Philadelph­ia, and chief executives of other cities throughout the state, has issued an order that the American flag, and the American flag only, be displayed on all public buildings, tomorrow, “All American Day.” His honor has also made the general request that the flag be displayed on residences and suggests that all automobile­s owners display the flag on their cars.

75 Years Ago – 1946:

A new case of diphtheria discovered late this morning forced health authoritie­s to extend the ban on youngsters’ attendance at movies in Chester. The ban on movies had been lifted by Timothy McCarey, city health officer, earlier today, because no new case had been reported in Chester since Monday.

50 Years Ago – 1971:

A 55-year-old former Springfiel­d trash collector and his court fight against township authoritie­s who condemned his house have both gotten a new lease on life. James H. Finch, formerly of Elm Avenue, is recuperati­ng from a month-long bout with appendicit­is and complicati­ons in Tri-County Hospital. He returned late in March to Rest Haven Nursing Home in Broomall, where he has lived since his house was bulldozed Feb. 5, 1970. “I was almost dead when I went there to Tri-County!” Finch said Monday. “They kept me alive by making me mad to keep me from just sleeping off,” he laughed.

25 Years Ago – 1996:

Despite a chronic problem with lack of recreation space, Darby Borough Council turned thumbs down to the Green Again referendum which will appear on the April 23primary ballot. Councilman Charles Sanders made the motion that council go on record as opposing the $100 million green open space measure, claiming it would cost each borough residents

(sic) $30 to $40 a year for the next 20years. In other matters, council approved the permit for a restaurant/ café for the new supermarke­t opening at 874 Main St., the site of the old Woolworth’s.

10 Years Ago – 2011:

Fueled by tensions in the Middle East, the aftereffec­ts of the earthquake in Japan and the onset of peak driving season, gas prices have hit a 30-month high. The average retail price of a gallon of regular, self-service gasoline in the Philadelph­ia area had risen to $3.66 per gallon by Tuesday morning, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.
