100 Years Ago – 1921: More than 50 persons in this county had died since the “enforcement” of national prohibition in Delaware County. The deaths have all been directly due to the decedents drinking concoctions containing poisons, such as “moonshine whiskey,” “Third Rail,” “Red Tommy,” wood alcohol and other narcotic and alcoholic poisons.
75 Years Ago – 1946: Negotiations are in progress for water rights and rights of way to bring a new water supply into the city of Chester. “A new water supply for the city of Chester is imminent,” the Chester Municipal Authority announced Monday.
Known to involve an “upland” source, tapping fresh stream back in the county, the project involves the acquisition of land for a reservoir and rights of way for pipelines into the city. 50 Years Ago – 1971: Delaware County officials have revealed plans calling for nearly $4.7 million in improvements and construction at Rose Tree Park located on the grounds formerly occupied by Rose Tree Hunt club in Upper Providence. The plan, prepared by von Storch & Burkavage of Media, calls for a 300-seat auditorium, an aquarium, an 80-seat planetarium, a greenhouse, a formal garden and plaza, a walkway where historic buildings could be situated, and extensive landscaping. The architectural engineering and planning firm also recommended that the old Rose Tree In – endangered by the widening of Providence Road (Route 252) – be renovated into a restaurant and moved further into the park.
25 Years Ago – 1996: Garnet Valley High School’s aging fire alarm system meets township codes and has been tested, but may have to be replaced, said Maintenance Director Robert Gillespie at Monday’s school board work session. Concord’s fire marshal recommended -- but did not order -- the system’s replacement. 10 Years Ago – 2011:
For the fifth straight year, Villanova University sent eight undergraduate and two graduate nursing students, two nurse practitioners and two faculty members to educate citizens in the Dominican Republic about basic daily practices that can help them lead healthier lives during March. Among them was Emily Lang of Upper Darby, a senior nursing student. She helped make a difference because she speaks Spanish fluently. She had also been to Honduras on three service trips.
