Delco Athletes Hall of Fame inductee speaks at Press Club
MEDIA » Richard Pagano, sportswriter, author, and host of “Faces on the Main Line” at MLTV-Main Line Network in Radnor, will be the speaker for the Delaware County Press Club’s end-of-season luncheon at The Inn at Swarthmore, 10 S. Chester Road, Swarthmore, on Wednesday, May 19.
Since 1987, Pagano has written over 1,700 columns on past sports personalities of Delaware County for Town Talk Newspapers and the News of Delaware County. His column is well-read and has appeared weekly in both daily and weekly newspapers for over 33 years.
He wrote and published two books: “Delaware County Sports Legends,” which showcases over 230 photographs that reveal the athletes and coaches that have contributed so much to Delaware County’s sporting past; and “The Baron of Leiperville: The Life and Times of James F. Dougherty,” a biography covering the life of Jimmy “Baron” Dougherty, the larger-thanlife sportsman whose hotel, bar, and fight arena in Leiperville was a mecca for boxing from 1916 to 1947.
He has published booklets on file and available at the Delaware County Historical Society and at the Library of the Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. His articles have also appeared in the International Boxing Research Organization Newsletter, College Football Researchers Association, The Amateur Boxer, Fistic Fever, and the Coffin Corner, the official magazine of the Pro Football Research Association.
A health and physical education teacher in the Upper Darby School District for 36 years before retiring in 2010, Richard received the Upper Darby Spotlight Award for his outstanding contribution to the Upper Darby School District in 1980 and the District Superintendent’s Certificate of Recognition for his 25 years of dedicated service to the Westbrook Park Elementary school’s gymnastic program.
He is both a Delaware County Athletes Hall of Fame and Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame: Delaware County Chapter inductee and Ridley Old-Timers “Outstanding Sportsman of the Year.”
All Press Club events are open to the public. Tickets for the luncheon are $30 for members and $35 for nonmembers. Guests will enjoy a sit-down luncheon with their choice of one of three entrees, a salad, and dessert. Reservations are recommended but guests can also pay by cash, check, or credit card at the door. Membership in the Press Club is available to individuals, businesses, and students working in all fields of communications and allied communication fields. Founded in 1979, the Delaware County Press Club is comprised of professionals, active and retired, from the fields of communications, including print and broadcast journalism, public relations, marketing, writing, and photojournalism, as well as communications teachers and students and professionals in allied fields. The Press Club season runs from September through May.

Kruger hosts Medicare 101 virtual workshop
State Rep. Leanne Krueger, D-161 of Nether Providence, will hold a virtual workshop, “Medicare 101,” at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 13.
The workshop will be held over Zoom and is being presented with Delaware County Senior Community Services’ APPRISE program. An APPRISE counselor will offer information on the basics of Medicare and answer questions. The workshop will be geared toward individuals who are already enrolled in Medicare as well as those who will qualify soon.

SCS presents attorneys to talk about minimizing estate taxes and issues
Senior Community Services will present Robert and Dana Breslin, Esq., and Christina Breslin Roberts, Esq. for a free presentation on how to minimize taxes and prevent tax problems for heirs, 1 p.m. Thursday, May 12. Phillies honor top educators of 2020 and 2021 at Monday night’s game
After a challenging school year filled with hybrid learning and zoom lessons, the top teachers in the region are about to get some much-deserved recognition from the Phillies, Constellation and their fans.
On Monday, May 3, the top 10 Phillies All-Star Teachers from 2021, along with those from 2020, will be honored at that night’s 7:05 p.m. game against the Milwaukee Brewers as part of the 21st annual Teacher Appreciation Night powered by Constellation, a leading competitive energy provider. The teachers were selected from hundreds of nominations sent to the Phillies by their current and former students, parents and peers. Delaware County resident Stephanie Freeman, an educator at Darby Township Elementary School in the Southeast Delco School District, will be among the 2021 honorees.
As part of the tribute, the Phillies All-Star Teachers will be recognized prior to the start of the game both from the Rooftop of Ashburn Alley, as well as on PhanaVision. Video highlights from a recent Phillies All-Star Teacher zoom call with manager Joe Girardi will also be shown on the big screen. In addition, the top teachers who received an Honorable Mention will get the chance to dance with the Phillie Phanatic in the 7th inning. For more information, visit phillies. com/community.
Local students named National Merit Scholarship winners
National Merit Scholarship Corp. recently released the names of the first group of winners in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 1,000 distinguished high school seniors have won corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards financed by about 140 corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations. Scholars were selected from students who advanced to the finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and met criteria of their scholarship sponsors. Most of these awards are renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study and provide annual stipends that range from $1,000 to $10,000 per year. Some provide a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000. Recipients can use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university of their choice. This is the first announcement of National Merit Scholars in 2021 by National Merit Scholarship Corp. NMSC will name recipients of National Merit® $2500 Scholarships on May 12, and winners of collegesponsored Merit Scholarship awards on June 2 and July 12. By the conclusion of this year’s competition, about 7,500 academic champions will have won National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $30 million.
