100 Years Ago – 1921:
Ridley Township commissioners yesterday deferred action upon a proposed ordinance, directed at the establishment of a sewerage system in the western section of their domain, and involving a sum running into many thousands of dollars. It was generally understood that the bill would come up for a second reading but instead of this perfunctory action, discussion hinged about a single clause, namely on which provides for connecting the old Leiperville sewer at Fairview Road and Jefferson Street, with a pipe that would extend northward on Fairview Road to
the township line.
75 Years Ago – 1946:
Swarthmore College students tightened their belts, drank heartily of water and sat down to a luncheon of 400 calories. The students also have petitioned for the elimination from college menus of all pies and cakes and for a reduction in bread in order to save wheat and other grains which can be sent to Europe.
50 Years Ago – 1971:
The Delaware County Bar Association will present its proposal for bolstering Chester’s economy through emphasis on its historic past to city council on Tuesday. The plan, which received enthusiastic approval from members of the A Better Chester Committee, calls for creation of an “Avenue of the States” from the foot of Market Street to Pennsylvania Station in conjunction with restoration of the 1724Courthouse.
25 Years Ago – 1996:
Guests at the Brandywine River Hotel will be able to raise a glass or two, now that Birmingham supervisors have lifted a ban on serving liquor there. Hotel owners Jeff and Lori Yamas petitioned supervisors to remove a stipulation from a previous agreement which prohibited the serving of alcohol on the premises which dates back to 1991, when hotel plans were first approved.
10 Years Ago – 2011:
A man suspected of stealing from several Springfield area churches was apprehended after being caught with his hand in a township church’s poor box, police said. The 46-yearold, who resides at a Media motel, was taken into custody by Media Police Officer Richard Leicht on Saturday. An arrest warrant had been issued for the man after a witness to an attempted church burglary picked his photo out of an array, according to Springfield police.
