The officials of the Chester baseball club found it necessary to call off the opening of the ball season this afternoon. The heavy rain made it impossible for the game to be played. All of the arrangements made for the opening last Saturday and today will prevail tomorrow if the weather permits.
75 Years Ago – 1946:
State employees in Delaware County, threatened by McClure workers with reprisals unless they voted for McClure candidates, are receiving letters direct from the Capitol, at Harrisburg, repudiating the McClure claims of a “deal” with the governor of State
Republican Organization. The threats to state employees were revealed when Elmer E.E. Eill, a McClure dual job-holder, ordered a Pennsylvania employee in the office of Arthur P. Bretherick, Delaware County Prothonotory, and chairman of the McClure county organization, to work for the McClure candidates at the May 21 Primarily Election.
50 Years Ago – 1971:
Some high school students in Yeadon may picket the three borough schools Wednesday if an injunction to bring the striking teachers back to work is not granted by the county court today. The strike enters its 10th day today, while the district’s three schools, with 1,300students remain closed.
25 Years Ago – 1996: A career member of the U.S. Navy whose mother lives in Sharon Hill was selected as the “Sailor of the Year” in his unit at the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base, Norfolk, Va. Petty Officer 1.C. Layton F. McGaw, son of Patricia D. McGaw, 1024 Barker Road, was selected as the outstanding enlisted man of Assault Craft Unit 2. McGaw, who was chosen as the top performer among all the sailors assigned to his command and was cited for outstanding professional accomplishment, proficiency, leadership, initiative and military bearing, joined the Navy after his 1983 graduation from Academy Park High School.
10 Years Ago – 2011:
Collingdale police are asking the public’s help identifying the thief who stole several stacks of inspections stickers from McDowell’s Auto Service last Wednesday. Owner Thomas McDowell reported that sometime after their 11a.m. delivery, a thief entered the office of his business in the 600block of MacDade Boulevard and stole the 500 inspection stickers from an unlocked safe before 5 p.m.
