100 Years Ago – 1921: The first crabs of the season have arrived in Commission Row, and, now, lovers of the sweet shell-fish can smack their lips over either variety, hard, or soft. Indicating the crustacea is just barely taking a peep into the market, soft shell are selling for $2.25 a dozen, while the hard shell are bringing 75 cents. The meat is priced at $1 a pound.

75 Years Ago – 1946: The national May campaign of the Polish-American Congress Inc, was launched locally on Sunday night at a well-attended rally in St. Hedwig’s Auditorium, Fourth and Wilson streets, Chester, when the United Polish Societies began their drive to collect the local quota of $4,500. The national quota is $1,000,000, the funds to be used to further the defense of the rights of Poland and to promote better understand­ing of Poland in this country. Joseph Mielcarek, county probation officer and president of the county chapter, called the meeting to order and presided. Walter Belczyk acted as secretary.

50 Years Ago – 1971: Beneath Chester’s urban problems, there rests a heart full of history of two city attorneys are trying to make it beat again. Nicholas D. Vadino Jr., secretary, and William C. Archbold Jr., first vice president of the Delaware County Bar Associatio­n, brought their plea to city council Tuesday and received an enthusiast­ic response. The request is to consider changing the name of Market Street to “Avenue of the States” to coincide with plans to exhibit 50 state flags over a 50-week period climaxing with the 100th anniversar­y of the bar associatio­n in 1972.

25 Years Ago – 1996: A 21-year-old Drexel Hill man and a 22-year-old Broomall who attempted to break into a skating rink after hours through the roof were found unconsciou­s on the property by Upper Darby police. They were “under the influence to a degree of danger” and taken into custody. Police responded to Neon Lights, State Road and Lansdowne Avenue, at 8:30 a.m. April 30 and found the men on the ground.

10 Years Ago – 2011: Restaurant­s and wine producers are criticizin­g the Pennsylvan­ia Liquor Control Board’s new policy, which changes the way the state assesses the so-called “bottle handling fee,” one of four state taxes applied to alcohol. Instead of the fixed rate depending on the size of the bottle, the new plan will apply a percentage tax to the price.
