Pa. must take action on greenhouse gasses
To the Times:
The effects and long-term impacts of climate change are more pressing than ever before and it is time we take action. As a citizen of Pennsylvania I am disheartened to learn that we are the fifthlargest emitter of greenhouse gases in the nation. Therefore, we have an important opportunity to lead and encourage other states by taking action on this issue.
Luckily there is a positive change on the horizon that will enable us to lower greenhouse gas emissions. The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) is a bipartisan multi-state program that would issue a cap on pollution from power plants, and further reduce those caps each year. Currently, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts,
New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Virginia, and Vermont are all states within RGGI and Gov. Wolf issued an executive order in October 2019, directing Pennsylvania to join RGGI.
This gives me hope that we can make a substantial difference in the pollution we emit every year. When Pennsylvania joins RGGI, it’s projected to further reduce carbon emissions statewide by a massive 188 million tons by 2030. That is why it is crucial that we join this initiative with no hesitation!
I urge my state Rep, Leanne Kruger, D-161 of Nether Providence, to oppose any efforts to prevent Pennsylvania from joining this program and taking action to reduce our impact on climate change, including HB637/SB119.
