100 Years Ago – 1921:

The efforts of Sen. A.D. MacDade of Chester, seconded by the county commission­ers, have been crowned with success in the matter of relieving for all time the Chester and Darby Telford Road from the payment of toll for vehicular traffic. The road runs from Philadelph­ia and Darby to Chester, passing through the populous districts of Darby, Sharon Hill, Glenolden, Norwood, Prospect Park, Ridley Park, Crum Lynne, Eddstyone and Ridley and Darby townships.

75 Years Ago – 1946:

Bread lines formed in Chester on Sunday afternoon. Nearly 1,000 persons, drawn from points as distant as Philadelph­ia, formed long lines at the Dalton Bakery, 214E. 16th St. They braved the downpour for more than two hours, standing in lines a block long, just to buy that precious loaf or rolls. While flour supplies have been cut under government restrictio­ns, proprietor Samuel Phillips said Dalton’s has a normal month’s supply on hand.

50 Years Ago – 1971: A special three-judge federal court panel will hear arguments next week on an 11th-hour challenge by a group of Swarthmore residents to the constituti­onality of the state’s school reorganiza­tion act. The

Swarthmore residents are seeking to block merger of the Swarthmore-Rutledge and Nether Providence school districts.

25 Years Ago – 1996:

A disorderly 17-year-old resisted arrest and bit police officers during a violent struggle, which also involved residents coming to the officers’ aid, Folcroft police said. The suspect said he had taken 16 hits of acid and yelled he was Jesus Christ and he was going to meet his maker. Officers Steve Ruggieri and William Wiseley initially responded to a call about a disorderly subject on Grant Road about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. The suspect resisted arrest by pushing Ruggieri. Wiseley went to assist and the teen punched Ruggieri on the right side of the face and punched Wiseley in the face. The officers wrestled him to the ground where he made growling noises and twice bit Wiseley on the right wrist.

10 Years Ago – 2011:

A 150th Civil War anniversar­y weekend is planned Saturday and Sunday at the site of the 1799Lazare­tto in Essington. The brave men and woman of the 1799 Lazaretto fought to protect that home-front during the war years from infectious diseases. There will be historian presentati­ons.
