100 Years Ago – 1921:

A number of changes in parishes of the Philadelph­ia diocese were announced this week by Cardinal Dougherty, some of the county churches being affected. In Chester, Rev. S.L. Wyborski is transferre­d from St. Hedwig’s to St. Josephat’s, Manaynk. Rev. Frederick F. Walewski, newly ordained, has been sent to St. Hedwig’s.

Rev. D.A. Coglan, assistant rectory of St. Ann’s, Philadelph­ia has been appointed rector of the new parish of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, at Lester and Essington. Rev. Leo J. Phillips, of the Church of St. Frances De Sales, Lenni, has been sent to St.

Philomena’s Lansdowne. His place will be taken by Rev. James H. McKeown. Rev. Vincent J. Campbell, of St. Philomena’s, has been changed to the Church of Corpus Christi, Philadelph­ia.

75 Years Ago – 1946:

One more indictment was racked up at Media against Clifford P. Redden, Chester’s alleged “flash bandit,” as the June Grand Jury continued its deliberati­ons Tuesday. Redden, who was indicted as a fugitive on 40 counts by the March Grand Jury, had a true bill returned against him on an additional charge of assault with intent to rob; burglary larceny and receiving stolen goods in connection with a Clifton Heights robbery.

50 Years Ago – 1971:

The law office of Democratic County Commission­er Edward T. McErlean, burglarize­d late last month, caught fire at 3:30 a.m. today. A partner in the law firm said the blaze was caused by a firebomb, although Media Fire Chief John B. VanLeer said the cuase was unknown. William E. Mowatt, partner in the law firm of Mowatt, McErlean, Pinto Theodore & Rubin, said “someone threw it (a firebomb) into the window” of their offices at Third and Olive streets.

25 Years Ago – 1996:

Chester Academy Principal

Shirley Polk has been tapped as the preferred candidate for the position of principal of Chester High School. Polk currently holds the top post at the highly successful Chester High Academy.

10 Years Ago – 2011: The Herbert W. Best VFW Post 928 earned recognitio­n by national headquarte­rs for its entry in the Community Activities Special Recognitio­n Program. The Folsom post and its ladies auxiliary earned “The Award of Merit” for its project, “Everlastin­g Memorial Bricks.” Post Commander Thomas A. Brown was notified in May.
