Segura placed on 10-day IL, Harper also ailing

- Staff and wire reports

The West Coast swing has been costly for the Phillies.

Not only have they lost two in a row to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but second baseman Jean Segura and right fielder Bryce Harper have come up lame.

The Phillies placed Segura on the 10-day injury list Wednesday after he came up hobbling in the ninth inning of Tuesday’s 5-3 loss to the Dodgers. Harper also left Tuesday’s game with lower back tightness and was not in the starting lineup.

Segura exited with a left groin injury in the ninth inning after hustling to reach base on an error by first baseman Albert Pujols. Segura was immediately replaced by pinch-runner Andrew Knapp.

Segura is leading the team and is fifth in the league with a .332 batting average. He has been on fire lately. He batted .368 (14-for-38) over the last nine games with eight RBIs and two walk-off hits. Segura went on the 10day IL in April with a strained right quadriceps.

Nick Maton was recalled to take Segura’s place on the roster.

Harper, who has battled back issues, appeared to tweak his back when he swung and missed at a pitch in the fourth inning. He eventually struck out to end the fourth inning and was taken out of the game. Luke Williams went from shortstop to right field and Ronald Torreyes came into the game at shortstop and took Harper’s place in the batting order.

“He didn’t look right to me,” Girardi said of Harper after Tuesday night’s game.

In addition to the back issues Harper has dealt with a left wrist contusion and a sore right shoulder. He was not in the starting lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers and is listed as day-to-day, but could be back in the lineup against the San Francisco Giants on Friday.

“It’s tough,” Girardi said of the injuries. “I’m not sure exactly what this means. But we’re going to need some guys to step up tomorrow.”

In other injury news, the rehab assignment of shortstop Didi Gregorius has been put on hold after general manager Sam Fuld revealed on the team’s pre-game radio show Tuesday night that Gregorius has a condition called pseudogout, which is a form of arthritis characterized by sudden and painful swelling in one or more joints. Gregorious has been on the injury list since May 13 with an injured right elbow. Fuld said he hopes that Gregorious can resume his rehab later this week.

NOTES » The Phillies announced a couple of signings Tuesday. The team signed free agent infielder Hao Yu Lee and assigned the promising 18-yearold prospect from Taiwan to its Gulf Coast League East team. The Phillies also signed first baseman/outfielder Brock Stassi from the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League to a minor-league deal. The 31-year-old Stassi played in 51 games for the Phils in 2017, batting .167 with two homers and seven RBIs. He has been assigned to Double A Reading.
