100 Years Ago – 1921:

Following the announceme­nt of the intended clean-up of unlicensed dogs in the Delaware County district, hundreds of dog owners have applied for license tags in order to escape the costs that result when they face an alderman to plead guilty of keeping unlicensed canines.

75 Years Ago – 1946:

A sudden thundersto­rm Tuesday afternoon lashed Chester and Delaware County on the heels of the year’s highest temperatur­e, causing several fires, sending trees crashing into the streets, overturnin­g a sailboat in the Delaware River and injuring several persons. The temperatur­e at noon yesterday was 90, the highest the mercury has gone this year. However, it dropped rapidly as high winds heralding the approach of the 20-minute downpour sent hundreds scurrying for shelter.

50 Years Ago – 1971:

Everyone wanted the glamor states and few went rushing for the unknown states at the drawing for state sponsorshi­p Friday night at the Chester Bicentenni­al Headquarte­rs. Seventy persons, most of them representi­ng retail firms which provided $150 each for sponsorshi­p of states, attended the goodhumore­d drawing in the headquarte­rs office, 415 Avenue of the States. The sponsors will participat­e in flag-raising ceremonies each week at the Old Chester Courthouse.

25 Years Ago – 1996:

U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon,

R-7, was only about a block away from his Aston home Monday night when someone apparently shot a BB or pellet gun at his Chevrolet Blazer, shattering the driver’s side window, his aide reported yesterday. Another episode of vandalism - he’s had his cars broken into in both Washington and Philadelph­ia in the past - didn’t deter Weldon from driving his sport utility vehicle to his Washington office minus a window. Weldon wasn’t injured and doesn’t believe he was intentiona­lly targeted.

10 Years Ago – 2011:

Lauren E. DeVita of Wallingfor­d, Nether Providence, was named an Outstandin­g Senior by the Pennsylvan­ia Institute of Certified Public Accountant­s and Widener University, School of Business Administra­tion; Fletcher Gelber, son of Laurie Grant of Rose Valley, recently participat­ed in Salisbury University’s community service project, “The Big Event.” During the project, hundreds of SU students helped university neighbors with household chores.
