100 Years Ago – 1921:
With Dr. Milton G. Evans, president of Crozer Seminary, as the principal speaker, members of the South Chester Baptist Church, Third and Jeffrey streets, Chester, ushered in exercises to commemorate the 50anniversary of their church last night. He took for this theme “The Church’s Beauty for the next Fifty Years.” In his talk he depicted the Church’s beauty in teaching the Gospel of peace.
75 Years Ago – 1946:
The Port of Chester went back to work this morning after 28days of maritime strike. Ships moved or got ready to move again for the first time since Oct. 1. The strike settlement ended almost two months of maritime labor difficulties. With the end of the strike came the end of the shipping jam at the Marcus Hook anchorage.
50 Years Ago – 1971:
County Special Prosecutor Richard A. Sprague had investigators enter Delaware County Republican Headquarters in Media Tuesday afternoon and seize GOP financial records. Sprague, the 1st assistant district attorney in Philadelphia, was appointed a special prosecutor by Delaware County District Attorney Stephen J. McEwen Jr. He said the request for warrants followed an investigation of alleged macing practices by GOP officials. Macing provides “kickbacks” payments to a political organization in recognition of continued support for a political job.
25 Years Ago – 1996:
Over 225 supporters of the YWCA of Chester gathered for its 81st annual dinner at the Ramada Inn in Essington, with a theme of recognizing, honoring, and awarding community activists, the unsung heroines and heroes. Honored at the event for their outstanding community service were community activists Yvonne Carrington, Barbara Muhammed, Ella Thompson and Ernestine
Tilghman; nuclear-energy activist Peggy Hasbrouck; Chester Partners cofounder Will Richan; and educator Vivian Ford.
10 Years Ago – 2011:
A law allowing red-light enforcement cameras to be placed in cities with a population of 18,000 or more in Pennsylvania, is one step closer to getting the green light. Senate Bill 595, sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi, R-9 Chester, was passed Wednesday by the Senate. That would make Chester eligible to have the enforcement cameras at selected intersections.
