100 Years Ago – 1921:

The 73rd annual banquet of Chester Lodge, No. 236, F. and A.M., was held last night in the new Masonic Temple, this meeting being the first assemblage of a regularly consisted lodge of Masons in the new Shrine. The members and guests total more than 700. Everyone expressed their appreciati­on of the new $500,000 temple. Some of them in a very substantia­l way. Gov. William C. Sproul tendered to the Masonic Associatio­n of Chester his book of bonds amounting to $5,000.

75 Years Ago – 1946: Roy H. Hoffman, former coach and then faculty manager of athletics at Media High school, died Sunday night at his home, Upper Darby, of a heart attack. He was 48. Widely-known throughout Delaware County among athletic and school persons, Mr. Hoffman also was dean of boys and taught social studies at Media High School. He had been there since September 1927.

50 Years Ago – 1971:

A comprehens­ive plan for future land use prepared by the Delaware County Planning Commission was received favorably by Media residents Wednesday at the plan’s unveiling in the Media firehouse. Earlier Wednesday, nearly 100 persons crowded into a luncheon meeting of the Media Business and Profession­al Associatio­n at the Towne House to learn more about proposals to build a pedestrian mall and provide a free cable car shuttle to replace autos and trolleys on State Street.

25 Years Ago – 1996:

A United Parcel Service maintenanc­e worker stole diamonds and other jewelry worth $100,000from the UPS complex near the airport. The 45-year-old Philadelph­ia man was nabbed by a UPS security guard as he tried to leave work Wednesday. He allegedly had some of the gems stuffed in his socks. More gems were found in a canvas bag he was carrying.

The jewelry was being shipped by UPS.

10 Years Ago – 2011: The shutdown of the Sunoco Marcus Hook refinery will begin today -- a move that’s expected to throw almost 500people out of work and end a 109-yearold tradition on Delaware County’s riverfront. Due to what they defined as declining market conditions, Sunoco Inc. officials decided Thursday to expedite the closure of the riverfront plant by several months because of its financial performanc­e. Company officials said they expect the idling to be completed the early part of next year.
