100 Years Ago – 1922:
The 13-acre estate known as “The Gables” and situated Sixth and Main streets, Upland, has been sold by the Horman H. Kane Corp., realtors of Chester, for Dr. J.P. Crozer Griffith. The Temporary Shelter For Women Inc., have made settlement and have taken immediate possession of the property. The main property is an elegant structure constructed of hand-cut Connecticut Brownstone and costs $70,000 to build some years ago.
75 Years Ago – 1947:
Smashing a show window with a brick, a thief escaped with more than $1,500worth of jewelry, mostly diamond rings, from the Morris Square Deal Jewelry Store at 519 Market St., Chester, early Sunday morning. A preliminary check shows that seven diamond rings are missing from the window and they are valued at approximately $1,550.
50 Years Ago – 1972: The conservationists and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation have hit upon at least one area of agreement. And it’s about 3.6 miles long. The area in question is a proportion of I-95 which formed the crux of a controversy between PennDOT and environmentalists because of fear the roadway would dissect the Tinicum marsh. However, that stretch of road will now shift around the marsh and will swing about 100 to 150 feet south of Darby Creek.
25 Years Ago – 1997:
A former Middletown councilwoman and strong advocate for historic preservation wants the developer of a proposed 92-lot subdivision in the 600 block of Mt. Alverno Road to save a dwelling on the property she believesis worth preserving. According to Leslie Potter of North Pennell Road, the house built in 1799, and tenant-occupied recently, is significant as an example of the postRevolutionary Adams style of architecture. Because it was constructed during a crucial time in U.S. history and is unique to the township, she believes it’s capable of being included on the National Register. 10 Years Ago – 2012:
Crab fry aficionados will be pleased to know Chickie’s & Pete’s has finally decided to set up shop in Delaware County. “The ink is dry and we should be open by June,” said owner Pete Ciarrocchi. Chickie’s & Pete’s will lease the former home of J.B. Dawson’s Restaurant & Bar at 5035 Township Line Road in the Pilgrim Gardens Shopping Center in Upper Darby.
