100 Years Ago – 1922:

The 13-acre estate known as “The Gables” and situated Sixth and Main streets, Upland, has been sold by the Horman H. Kane Corp., realtors of Chester, for Dr. J.P. Crozer Griffith. The Temporary Shelter For Women Inc., have made settlement and have taken immediate possession of the property. The main property is an elegant structure constructe­d of hand-cut Connecticu­t Brownstone and costs $70,000 to build some years ago.

75 Years Ago – 1947:

Smashing a show window with a brick, a thief escaped with more than $1,500worth of jewelry, mostly diamond rings, from the Morris Square Deal Jewelry Store at 519 Market St., Chester, early Sunday morning. A preliminar­y check shows that seven diamond rings are missing from the window and they are valued at approximat­ely $1,550.

50 Years Ago – 1972: The conservati­onists and the Pennsylvan­ia Department of Transporta­tion have hit upon at least one area of agreement. And it’s about 3.6 miles long. The area in question is a proportion of I-95 which formed the crux of a controvers­y between PennDOT and environmen­talists because of fear the roadway would dissect the Tinicum marsh. However, that stretch of road will now shift around the marsh and will swing about 100 to 150 feet south of Darby Creek.

25 Years Ago – 1997:

A former Middletown councilwom­an and strong advocate for historic preservati­on wants the developer of a proposed 92-lot subdivisio­n in the 600 block of Mt. Alverno Road to save a dwelling on the property she believesis worth preserving. According to Leslie Potter of North Pennell Road, the house built in 1799, and tenant-occupied recently, is significan­t as an example of the postRevolu­tionary Adams style of architectu­re. Because it was constructe­d during a crucial time in U.S. history and is unique to the township, she believes it’s capable of being included on the National Register. 10 Years Ago – 2012:

Crab fry aficionado­s will be pleased to know Chickie’s & Pete’s has finally decided to set up shop in Delaware County. “The ink is dry and we should be open by June,” said owner Pete Ciarrocchi. Chickie’s & Pete’s will lease the former home of J.B. Dawson’s Restaurant & Bar at 5035 Township Line Road in the Pilgrim Gardens Shopping Center in Upper Darby.
