Police nab suspects in 2 Ridley area police pursuits

Ridley Park police were dispatched to the intersecti­on of Chester Pike and Acres Drive for a possible hit and run. At 3:29 a.m. Tuesday, with initial reports indicating a possible attempted carjacking, but no carjacking or robbery occurred, police said.

Ridley Park Police Chief Robert Frazier reported police located the striking car, which immediatel­y fled the area at a high rate of speed, nearly striking a Ridley Township police car.

Officers activated their lights and sirens and attempted to stop the fleeing vehicle, a dark model SUV with Delaware license plates and identified as being stolen out of Wilmington. The fleeing vehicle traveled on Swarthmore Avenue, crossing McDade Boulevard, traveling up Morton Avenue and crashing into a one-way street sign in Morton.

Police took two subjects into custody, Nahfee Benton of Marcus Hook and Davonte Lewis of Chester, who is on probation, according to police.

Police report a Springfiel­d man had a 9 mm. handgun with one bullet in the chamber and 19 bullets in the cartridge. Both subjects were taken into custody and transporte­d to a local hospital for treatment to await charges of possession/operating of a stolen vehicle, guns charges (Not registered to possess firearms), and traffic offenses.

Morton-Rutledge Fire Co. assisted EMS and with lighting for police on the scene.

Aaron Kisela of the Ridley Park Police Department,” Frazier said.

Later that afternoon, Ridley Township police responded to the Wawa at 111 Morton Ave. for a report of a robbery of a motor vehicle with a firearm implied.

Police responding to the call spotted the stolen vehicle turning onto MacDade Boulevard. Officers followed the vehicle and upon activating emergency lights and siren the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, police said on their Facebook page.

Officers we’re able to stop the vehicle after a short pursuit and take two males into custody, their names were not released by police.

Police said there was no firearm used in the incident and the suspects have been charged accordingl­y.

Ridley police noted there has been an increase region wide in the theft of motor vehicles and remind residents to be aware of their surroundin­gs and exercise caution when entering and exiting their vehicles.
