100 Years Ago – 1922:

Never has there been inaugurate­d a more worthy organized appeal for immediate financial help than that of the Chester American-Jewish Relief Appeal, to extend from April 2-9. Not in years has there been found in the records of destitutio­n among classes of people so much need of immediate help as exists today in Eastern Europe and Palestine. The condition there is appalling. It is beyond human imaginatio­n and belief. It is this horrible truth that has inspired the Relief Committee of the YMHA, Jewish Community Center at Fourth and Madison streets, to raise $30,000, within the week beginning April 2.

75 Years Ago – 1947:

Tuesday’s 60-mile-anhour winds added up to this tall story, which is vouched for by a Chester Times correspond­ent.

Mrs. Fred Rahbek, of Providence Road, Primos, put her ten-month-sold daughter, Betty Lou, out in her carriage at about 1 p.m., covered the carriage and went back into the house. A few moments later she looked out the window. The coach was gone. So was Betty Lou. Betty Lou was rushed to a doctor with the greatest of speed. His diagnosis – completely uninjured, except for one very muddy face. Betty Lou was put back to bed – inside the house.

50 Years Ago – 1972:

The former Aldon Rug Mills plant in Lenni Mills lay in ruins today, victim of a weekend fire that was discovered early Sunday and was still burning this morning after a day-long assault by some 200 firemen from 12 fire companies.

25 Years Ago – 1997:

Norwood council approved the flying of the DARE flag at Monday night’s meeting on April 10, National DARE Day. Officer Paul Stolz, who regularly presents the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program in the Interboro schools, requested council’s approval. “We’ll probably be the only police department to fly one,” Stolz said.

10 Years Ago – 2012:

Help is on the way for beleaguere­d pedestrian­s who have to negotiate five lanes of traffic to get across MacDade Boulevard at Morton Avenue in Ridley Township without the benefit of pedestrian walk lights. The intersecti­on is further complicate­d by Haverford Road, which runs south from MacDade to Fairview Road. Penn-DOT spokesman Gene Blaum said the department has approved a regional safety improvemen­t project that will include the upgrades.
