Delco Boys Basketball League finishes season with kudos to volunteers
PROSPECT PARK » The Delco Boys Basketball League recently finished the season and the following clubs have won championships in the league: Springfield won three championships: 8U, 10UA, 12UA; Clifton Heights won two championships:12UB and 16U; Tinicum won the10UB championship; Glenolden won the 14UB championship; and Collingdale won the 14UA championship. Almost every club had at least one team make the playoffs.
“As you know this year had its share of challenges with coronavirus threatening to shut down the county and our communities multiple times,” said Pat Quinn, president of the league. “Somehow, thanks to the great school districts and communities that we live in, and all of our volunteers, we persevered and kept the kids playing.”
Quinn especially wants to thank the clubs in these school districts for their participation: Interboro School District (Glenolden, Norwood, Prospect Park, Tinicum); Ridley School District (Ridley ABA/Kedron); Springfield School district (Springfield); William Penn School District (Aldan); Upper Darby School district (Clifton Heights and Highland Park) Southeast Delco School District (Folcroft, Collingdale and the Briarcliffe youth club). He also said the successful season would not have been possible without the leaders of the youth clubs, coaches, referees and volunteers who ran the clocks and the books and much more. “Thanks to all those who saw and acted on the need to keep all of our kids active, including learning and playing basketball, having fun and, most importantly, teaching and enforcing good sportsmanship principles in a safe harbor,” Quinn said.
While there are too many folks to name who have helped the league complete its mission, three volunteers were nominated and voted to win the 2022 “Pat Quinn Sportsperson of the Year Award.”
Dan McCann has coached in multiple communities over the years, including in both Glenolden and Prospect Park. McCann has also been a ref in the Delco League for many years, teaching the players, as well as enforcing rules fairly.
Theresa Long helped to start the Delco League many years ago. Through the years, Long has been the refereeing scheduler and advisor to the league.
Matt McGuire, Springfield director, has been a coach for many years, as well as secretary of the Delco league and member of the rules committee.
“On behalf of the youth clubs, I congratulate these three folks and all the other volunteers for helping to keep our kids safe while having fun,” Quinn said.
