100 Years Ago – 1922:

A “moonshine” distillery which is believed to be the means of furnishing an enormous supply of illicit liquor in this county and Wilmington, Del., was unearthed by the alertness of Detective Pascale, whose vigilance was rewarded when a detail of police headed by Chester Mayor William T. Ramsey and Captain of Police Cummings raided a dwelling at 935 W. Second St. They found a 40-gallon still in operation, 10 barrels of rye mash one barrel of rye, three barrels partly filed with water, and 10empty barrels. Two 10-gallon demijohns partly filled with “moonshine” were confiscate­d by the police along with the still and all parapherna­lia, consisting of tubing, containers and a gas stove.

75 Years Ago – 1947:

A special committee to spur developmen­t of a Chester-owned parking lot was created by Chester Business Men’s Associatio­n. The three-member committee was named by President Meyer J. Freed after a central-city merchant described parking conditions as “unbearable.”

50 Years Ago – 1972:

A 68-year-old Chester man was injured at 9:55 a.m. today when his car hit a showroom window and a brick wall causing an estimated $10,000 damage at King Chevrolet, 75 E. Ninth St. Reuben Wachtel, sales manager at King Chevrolet, said the car damaged water pipes when it ran through the brick wall.

25 Years Ago – 1997:

Two boys, ages 15 and 16, are being charged as adults for allegedly holding a gun to the head of a delivery man, authoritie­s said yesterday. Upper Darby police were able to crack the case by tracing orders for steaks with ketchup, mayo and sweet peppers placed with the delivery man’s sandwich shop. “They forced the guy down to the floor and put a gun to his head, and took $25 or $30, and the sandwich -- a steak with ketchup, mayo and sweet peppers,” said Detective Sgt. Anthony Paparo.

10 Years Ago – 2012:

Because roof trusses in an entire wing of Media Elementary School pose a structural problem and must be replaced, a structural engineer engaged by Rose Tree Media School District recommends the building be unoccupied during remediatio­n, because of the complexity of the project. Therefore, the entire school operation -- including students and staff -- must move to another location for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year.
