100 Years Ago – 1922:
Faith in America as the greatest nation in the world, better spirit of business cooperation, necessity of “pulling for foreign trade,” by sending young American representatives to every country in the world, were emphasized by Samuel M. Vauclain, president of the Baldwin Locomotive Works, in telling the members of the Chester Rotary Club and their guests at the annual meeting in the Chester
Club last night that United States has everything to be thankful for in a rapid return to normal prosperity.
75 Years Ago – 1947:
“Spring housecleaning” will begin on Monday in Chester’s yards, streets, alleys and vacant lots. All over the city, residents and businessmen have been asked to cooperate with the Chester Community Council and the city officials in a campaign to clean and beautify Chester. Michael A. Honan, director of public safety, has announced that the city’s collection trucks will be prepared to take care of increased loads of garbage and rubbish.
50 Years Ago – 1972:
President Nixon’s decision to escalate military efforts in Vietnam has gained a negative response from Swarthmore students and faculty. More than 100of them traveled to Washington today to convey to members of Congress their “dismay” and “disapproval” of the president’s announced plans.
25 Years Ago – 1997:
Could Beau Cannon be the happiest little boy in Delaware County? Perhaps he was Thursday, when the Wallingford 7-year-old received the whole kit and caboodle, Beanie Babies speaking. Beau brought along his family to help haul home the complete set of 77 plush toys he won in a random drawing at the Brookhaven McDonald’s Family Restaurant. All of the McDonald’s in Delaware County had similar raffles in conjunction with the restaurants’ Teenie Beanie Babies give-away.
10 Years Ago – 2012:
The late Alfred DeSerio, a longtime Marine who died Saturday at the age of 105, was recognized Wednesday by U.S. Rep. Bob Brady, D-1, of Philadelphia, on the floor of the House of Representatives. A longtime Collingdale resident, he resided in the St. Francis Country House in Darby during the last years of his life. He died Saturday. Brady entered a tribute to DeSerio into the Congressional Record Wednesday, asking his colleagues to join him “in recognizing the lift of Alfred L. DeSerio and his service to our nation.”
