100 Years Ago – 1922:

Children’s Day services were conducted in many Chester churches yesterday. Appropriat­e programs were carried out by the children before record breaking congregati­ons in several of the churches. At the third Presbyteri­an Church, the dive department­s of the church, beginners, primary, juniors, intermedia­tes and seniors, 1,200 in all, in addition to a large congregati­on filled the church and auditorium adjoining.

75 Years Ago – 1947:

Trustees of the Deshong Estate are protesting the use of Deshong Park property for streetwide­ning purposes. The trustees through the estate solicitor, Guy W. Davis, have required a hearing before Chester City Council to review the plan. Mayor Swarts said today a hearing will be granted. Two projects are pending. One calls for the widening of Ninth Street, between Welsh Street and Edgmont Avenue. The other project is widening of Edgmont Avenue from Ninth to 12th Streets. City officials estimate this can be done without the use of park land by eliminatin­g the sidewalk.

50 Years Ago – 1972:

A national group of businessme­n opposed to the war in Vietnam plans to intervene in a Delaware County congressio­nal race in the November general election. The group opposes the re-election bid of Rep. Lawrence G. Williams, R-7 of Springfiel­d, because he is considered one of 12 “hawkish” congressme­n termed the “deadly dozen” by the businessme­n, according the New York Times. The antiwar group, the Business Executives Move for Vietnam Peace and New National Priorities, said it hopes to raise $150,000 to financiall­y aid challenger­s of the “deadly dozen.”

25 Years Ago – 1997:

Two bicycles were reported stolen after two boys left them in some brush in the 500 block of Stevens Drive while watching the aftermath of an accident on I-95 Saturday, Tinicum police said. A resident of the 500 block of South Gov. Printz Boulevard in Lester told police the bikes valued at a total of $420 were placed in the brush about 6 p.m. and were gone when the boys returned 15minutes later.

10 Years Ago – 2012:

Bras and panties worth about $6,000 were reported missing from the Victoria’s Secret store at the Granite Run Mall last week. The theft took place between 6:45 and 9:30 p.m. June 2, but was not reported for two days.
