100 Years Ago — 1922: “Secretary Weeks’ declaring in favor of light wines and beer was not made in an address to the graduating class, but in an interview given to newspaper reporters,” said Colonel Charles E. Hyatt, president of the Pennsylvania Military College. “The reports in the newspaper made that clear,” he continued, “but some of the headlines left a misapprehension in the minds of the readers. It would like to correct that error. “Secretary Weeks was present to receive a degree and he did not deliver an oration. His remarks were strictly in line with the occasion and he did not discuss prohibition or other national policies. What he had to say on these matters was confined exclusively to his interview.”

25 Years Ago — 1997: Members of the Delaware County Police Chiefs Association are really annoyed by a change in police certification standards by a state agency and are planning a regional campaign that will “”raise some hell” at the 1997 convention of the Pennsylvania Police Chiefs Association. The main change requires police officers, including police chiefs, to re-certify if they change their employment. A certified police officer who has completed mandatory training would have to qualify anew, including physical requirements.

10 Years Ago — 2012: A team of federal and local law enforcement agencies captured 23fugitives Friday morning during an organized operation, said Chester Police Commissioner Joseph Bail. Two other fugitives turned themselves in later in the day. Bail said the operation was phase one of a three-phase crime initiative, followed by information gathering on violent crimes. The third phase gives the streets back to the residents of Chester, he said.
