100Years Ago — 1922:

Suspected of being rum runners, four men of Wilmington, Del, arrested shortly before midnight, were given hearings in the city police court this morning and held under $1,500each for further hearings. Their arrest came about through the alertness of Detective John Freimuth. The latter was in the vicinity of Front and Lloyd streets shortly before 12o’clock last night. A Sedan in which the four were riding drove up slowly, arousing Freimuth’s suspicion and ultimately resulting in the men’s arrested by Freimuth and Patrolman Cannon at Third and Madison streets.

75Years Ago — 1947: Despite a shortage of adequate recreation areas in the city of Chester, the “new” high school athletic field remains closed to all save school activities. The board has jealously guarded its “new” field ever since its purchase seven years ago. It even refused to allow the Lloyd Athletic Club to use it when that organization was awaiting the release of its own field from ware use by the government. This despite the fact that the Lloyd Club has permitted the high school to use Lloyd Field for various activities.

50Years Ago — 1972:

Media Borough Council voted unanimously Thursday night to meet next week with borough merchants to discuss the State Street pedestrian mall, called the “walkabout.” Council members say they hope to hear explanations of why the Media Businessmen’s Association, sponsors of the mall, voted 19-9Wednesday against continuing the project beyond its scheduled July 29 closing date.

25Years Ago — 1997: When Mike Fusco would regularly drive under the graffiti-ridden railroad trestle on Route 452 in Aston, he often wondered if there was a way to turn the eyesore into something useful. Fusco later heard about “”Rails to Trails,” a plan throughout the United States to convert abandoned railroad lines into multi-purpose trails. An outdoorsman and nature lover, he and others two years ago formed the group Friends of the Chester Creek Branch, an offshoot of the ChesterRidley-Crum Watershed Association. Their mission:

Convert 6.7miles of the old Chester Creek Branch rail line into a multi-use trail for the public’s use.

10Years Ago — 2012: Media Borough Council has closed a gap regarding potential billboard types and use in the borough. An ordinance amendment now regulates electronic billboards where the existing ordinance had not addressed that technology. According to council President Brian Hall and borough Solicitor Robert Scott, other municipalities have had ordinances challenged on the grounds that they were silent on electronic billboards, and therefore they could go anywhere.
