100 Years Ago, 1922: Three “wanderers” were arraigned before Magistrate Elliott in Police Court this morning and upon their promises to get out of Chester and not return, were released from custody. George Melvin, 16years old, of Maryland, said he had been employed by a farmer of Llanerch, this county, and when discharged sought employment at Claymont. He was told to report the following day and having no place of abode sought a night’s lodging at police headquarte­rs. Jim Ewing, of Columbus., Ohio, was found sleeping in a wagon at Sixth Street and Morton Avenue by Patrolman C. Hardman. He was on his way to Baltimore, Md., where he had been promised employment. William Short, of Milford, Del., landed here last week and was loitering in the vicinity of Third and Market streets early Wednesday morning.

75 Years Ago, 1947: When the Army transport Robert Burns docks in New York about Wednesday, the bodies of 22Delaware Countians will be among those of 4,212fightin­g men being returned. Nineteen of the local dead are being returned form Henri Chappelle Military Cemetery, Eupen, Belgium. Three — James Facciolo, James Johnson and Robert K. Thompson — are from the cemetery at St. Laurent-surMer, 10miles west of Bayeux, France. All the Delaware county casualties are Army personnel, and many fell in the D-Day assault on Omaha Beach. 50Years Ago, 1972: Bright red and yellow Christmas lights and flickering red electric candles will glow cheerily in the downtown shopping area tonight for the first time this season. A city official will pull the switch which illuminate­s 40garlands of yule lights during a ceremony at 5p.m. at the Old Courthouse, on the Avenue of the States, between Fourth and Fifth streets. 25 Years Ago, 1997: The Citizens Forum, a group of taxpayers from the three communitie­s that make up the Ridley School District, met over the weekend to hear an alternativ­e proposal to building a new high school. The group is on record as advocating the renovation of the existing high school rather than build a new $46 million high school.

10 Years Ago, 2012: The no-texting law in Pennsylvan­ia has been in effect since March 8, and according to numbers listed by AAA Mid-Atlantic, the region that has had the most drivers ticketed for texting while driving is … the five-county Philadelph­ia region, accounting for about 45 percent of tickets while making up 33 percent of the state’s population. Delaware County was fifth on the list with 52 texting tickets in the first six months.
